When I was a kid, we converted an old 1953 GMC 4104 bus into a "band" bus. The bus was 40 years old at the time (early 90s). It had a 6V71 Detroit. The old bus turned out find and ran well. We drove it for over a year with none of us knowing how to downshift it. HA! I ran into an OG at an event and explained the situation...He just laughed and laughed. He said it's easy. Just keep it wound up. When you want to downshift, put your foot on the floor, run those RPMs up as high as they will go in the next lower gear, and it will slip right into the lower gear. He was right! Lesson learned, those old motors liked to be run hard....actually it's the only way I know how to run them. Yes, it's the complete opposite of today's engines. Noisy...yes....leak oil....yes...fun to drive, you bet....fast...yes it was...overheat...it certainly did.
