I would love to also learn about heavy equipment/diesel mechanics in addition to driving trucks.
I am aware that their are socket drive sizes: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1-inch, even 1 1/2-inch, and even 2 1/2-inch
First, what is the biggest drive size you need for semi-trucks?
Second, what are the socket size ranges for standard and deep sockets a diesel mechanic will need without having to do a job where they will have to go purchase more and/or bigger tools (sockets)?
Thank You Much

3/8 and 1/2 are standard. 1/4 general service set for cab work. 3/4 and 1 are shop supplied. 3/4 for small yoke nuts ubolts and head bolts. 1 for large yoke nuts.
I still pull tires with a 1/2 cordless.
3/8 i go from 5/16 to 1". Rarely use the sockets at the extreme ends. 1/2 goes from 1/2 to 1 1/8. Use 3/4 and up on the 1/2.spsauerland and A5¢ Thank this. -
Heck... I don’t know what sizes are in each drive set...... I just know I have most of them. I don’t use them enough to remember them. Short, deep, swivel, impact, 6 point, 12 point.
A5¢ Thanks this. -
I think the biggest socket I have on the truck is 1-5/16" in 1/2" drive. I have larger sizes at the shop, but not sure how large.

I have a socket that's 1/2 drive 1-1/2 to pull wheels back in the day. But that was all air, what brand would you recommend for a cordless..
Sorry if I hijacked .. -
Used to use snapon. Switched to milwaukee and loving it so far. Gotta get the fuel models for the power though.
HoneyBadger67 and Final Drive Thank this. -
Milwaukee it is... -
I would say lugs.....33 or 34 mm

I use Milwaukee drills and impacts. They have more power and torgue, a better tool, and for less MUCH LESS money than the truck brand tools (e.g., SnapOn, Mac, Matco). If I was starting from scratch, I would have Milwaukee power and impact tools.BoxCarKidd and Final Drive Thank this.
