We only have to log one so I always log my post trip. I do this because if I find something wrong with the truck during my pretrip, at least I have time to fix it since my clock has not started. If I log on duty for my pretrip, the 14 he has now started. I only log a pre trip if I've been off the truck for a few days. I always do a pre trip but save that valuable time on my clock.

The law states the driver must be satisfied with his equipment it doesn't require a specific amount of time, however, if a DOT officer asks your driver to do a pretrip do you think he can do a full level one style pretrip in 2-3 minutes? I believe this is why companies usually require a 15 minute pretrip. I personally do 12-15 minutes for a pretrip and 2-3 minutes for a post trip even if I do it in less time. CYA

I'm curious, why does it NEED to be part of the regs for a driver to want to do the inspections?

Have you never met a driver? As a group we are lazy. :)
Actually I think it has more to do with how we are paid more than anything. Back when I was cpm or trip I'd the the absolute minimum so I could get moving to make money. Now that I'm paid by the hour I take as long as needed to go over the equipment.

LOL, ours are hourly yet they still seem to fight a real inspection. They do it but in the "roll of the eyes and grumble" kind of way.

I need to just get my CDL and see what happens. Guess who will be delivering the trucks when the guys don't want to after THAT. ;)

Back in the good ol days before 9/11, you had to stop and kick the tires every 100 miles and log it when you had a Hazmat load. The guberment put a stop to it because they thought a terrorist was hiding behind every bush along the interstate and would try to hijack you.
Imagine having to do that today with ELD's.

The fricken police can write anyone a ticket for anything. We are, unfortunately, guilty until we can prove our innocence. If you like going to court, then do your own interpretation of the laws. I defended myself and won just a couple months ago (weight restricted road). My recommendation is to log it every single time. The new ELD's we have now is nothing more than a revenue generator for the law. I will go to court EVERY time I get a ticket, don't care where it's at... with my same 6 stacks of paperwork as 2 months ago. Most of my paperwork wasn't even relevant, I was simply going to make them waste a butt load of time on my case and get my money's worth. Magically, my case was dismissed during my cross examination of the officer.

First off what’s a level one style pre-trip. Secondly I guess a “DOT” guy can ask you to do anything he wants including pre-trip inspections, physics problems, calculus problems and dye his hair but you are not obliged to do any of them.
