Start with just a drop or two, and don't mix or stir. Drop it on top, let it sit 20-30 seconds, then take in the aroma and sip. In an oil-heavy whiskey you'll notice a change of smell and flavour, since the water reacts with the oils and pulls them to the top of the glass. It'll only work once or twice with a single ounce, but it'll really help you appreciate the the more subtle things hiding in there.

And there are some whiskies that it won't change anything about.
