I saw this posted about a year ago. I hadn't even entered truck school back them. (I won't graduate until May 1, 2007 ... about 10 more days.) I hope this is the best place to ask this ... but ... "speaking from experience" ... what list of items are best to bring on the road? (I suppose the list would be different for flatbed drivers than van drivers?)

flatbed... take alot of clothes with you (lot of socks), clean towels, couple sets of sheets, baby wipes come in handy, baby powder, lots of deoderant, a couple pair of quality gloves, leather palms are best, hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, orange safety vest, 1 pair of steel toe boots, rain gear, TOOLS, claw hammer, sledge hammer, crow bar, keep a cooler in your truck with cold drinks or water in it, a first aid kit, knee pads, couple cans of WD-40, 5 foot ladder... I'm sure there are a few things that I am forgetting, its been a few years since I pulled a skateboard.

vans... pretty much the exact same list, except you probably won't need the ladder, knee pads and maybe not as many clothes.

sometimes on a flatbed, it is nice to be able to strip out of the nasty smelly clothes you were wearing while you tarped a large load of lumber in the hot sun, towel off, and put some clean clothes on. it might be a few hours til you get a chance to take a shower, having clean clothes on can make a big difference in your attitude and mood between loading and showering...

I just found the greatest thing and was only $11. After roasting in my truck recently I took the little windshield cover out of my car and tried it. Worked well but too small so I went to Wallys to get a second one. Well they have these "super jumbo" ones that fit my entire windshield. First it cuts heat way down but it also provides a lot of private space. Previously I only had a curtin that closed off the bunk. I love it and it was cheap.

I'd get a big coffee can and some white trash bags, TP and baby wipes. Never know when you might have a case of Monty's Revenge and they are handy at that time

5 gallon bucket, tall kitchen garbage bags work in pinch too.

took a ride down 89A from Utah to the top of the Grand Canyon. Monty kicked in way out in the middle of nowhere. A 5 gallon bucket really helps when you are suffering.
