it is where they pay less per mile and take part of the per mile pay (.10) and pay it with out taxes being taken out ..... you need to consult a tax pro to see how it will affect you ..... one of the end results is you technically show you are making less money which can make it tougher to get a loan as well as unemployment/worker comp/retirement plans pay less also

Accountant said if I can live with obvious drawbacks (less reportable gross for loans etc.) to have extra withholding on w4 to account for year end taxation on per diem....irs Publication 1542 discusses per diem but it's gobbly guck to me ..... that's why I consult tax accountant

Tell your tax accountant that the tranportation deduction is located on page 6 of publication 463. It is what you should be using.

As far as taking the per diem through the company pay check, it really is not a good idea.

It reduces your gross, so if you are hurt, workmen's comp will be based on the reduced amount. If you go for a loan, it will be on the reduced amount.

But it really comes down to whatever you decide.

    Baack Thanks this.

Roadmedic ..... I see what your saying. I was told by Roehl today that the per diem pay is now the only option new drivers have.

First as a disclaimer I'm not going to debate what he does or doesn't make, I'm only sharing this so anyone new to the company can get an idea of what the settlements/paystubs/whatever look like. This is the online version, paper version isn't to much different. This isn't his worse week, not his best, it was right before hometime that he requested needing to be in for.

I put a link to it, I hope that's ok, I know some people may have bandwidth restrictions and may not want to inadverantly add to their usage with something they may not want to see.
Yes we are per diem, yes we chose it, yes we're probably idiots but what else is new lol.
Anyway I hope this helps someone, somewhere.
