And don't forget to disconnect the white reverse light while you're at it.
I do have a question though.
If the driver passes out for whatever reason and the transmission is in a forward gear, will it roll backwards very fast if the engine is still running?
I guess the engine might stall at that point...

For the sake of realism, I'd say the average truck at legal weight should be able to pull a typical hill in say 4th or 5th. If a driver were to let the throttle off completely, the truck would probably stall in gear. Weight of the load would drag the truck backwards. Since the truck is in a forward gear but rolling backwards, the engine would also rotate in reverse. In real life, it could very well run in reverse, start puffing smoke out the air cleaners lol.
Oxbow, Art Vandelay and bzinger Thank this. -
If the driver doesnt downshift itll lug to a stall, buck, then shut down and probably compression brake a bit backwards.
Is this an auto trans or manual? If its a manual you may need to kill the engine to get it into reverse quickly as you come to a standstill at the top. With the truck parked and engine idling theres gonna be about 3-5 seconds of waiting for the input shaft to slow down with the clutch in. Maybe a bit faster if the clutch brake works and you stomp it to the floor. Plus ypu have to remember to flip to the low side.
Youll still have a few pumps of brake pedal with engine off, and spring brakes when you pop the knobs tho it may be a hairy ride. If the key stays on an older truck should pop start in reverse ??? Idk.. Anyways an auto would be easier. -
Other than disconnecting the brake lights, this is what I feel is most logical.
When you know your about to stop just ease it out of gear, and lightly ease it against, but not in reverse.... you’ll feel the teeth on the gears touching, as it rolls backwards and picks up a little speed just slip it right on in gear. -
Don't ruin it with realism, it's tv. Lol
But seriously, thanks for the reply.Oxbow Thanks this. -
Have you read any of X1Heavy’s posts? He’s done it all, from making a Mack truck do a wheelie to actually breaking a scale. My all time favorite is when his wife was bobtailing on ice down Grapevine. She lost the headlights so he stood on the hood of the truck with a flashlight to light the way.
I can’t verify it, but they say he played Johnny Be Good on the ukulele with the other hand. He would even flash passing trucks to let them know it was safe to move back over. Maybe he could be a consultant on set.Last edited: Sep 24, 2019

I say fill it up with water. as you get to the top. lose your gear and let it roll backwards in neutral. i heard the speedo will go from 85mph to 0.PoleCrusher Thanks this.

Running backwards downgrade.
Do not come out of gear whatever you do. Whatever it is in is the gear it has to stay in if you managed to ignore the engine going past redline. (It will probably be damaged or destroyed) but those drives going backwards downgrade is a form of "Drag" that will hold you for a while.
You will be happy to have a tanker or something there to crash into when you get to it.
I don't know how else to gamble a tractor trailer backwards downhill runaway. Its going to get broken when its forced past normal limits mechanically.
There is only one truck that I would do things with transmission and that is the Mack 15 speed on the Superliner 500. that transmission offers you 15 ahead and 15 back. So you can do some shifting going backwards. You would not be doing that very long because it will try to swap ends and flop over doing it once she is allowed to "Wriggle" -
