Maybe their extra speed ran out.

I am governed at 65, but I can bump it up to 67 for up to 30 minutes per day with the PassSmart feature.
It is handy for passing those trucks that are .5 slower than me without taking TOO much time to do it.
It does not save me that much time in the long run, but it is better than riding the back end of someone for hours.

I have never used up that 30 minutes of extra speed, and if I did I would not just hang out in the fast lane pacing someone.

NavigatorWife, tinytim and FlaSwampRat Thank this.

And then there are those that come up behind me, tailgate for 20 miles, then pull around me and slow down to slower that what I was going in the first place.
Then speed up as I try to pass them.

Takes all kinds..i guess. I drive a lot of 2 lane. Some 4 wheeler behind me misses 5 great chances to pass me. Then when a vehicle is approaching head on, they are passing me. Or on the brow of a hill they pass. Guess the phrase" dumber than a box of rocks" kind of explains it.

Wind resistance. When they're behind you, they have very little wind resistance.
When they pull out to pass the wind resistance gets stronger, the closer their tractor bumper gets to your tractor bumper.
When they're even with you, and governed about the same as your truck, the wind resistance is so strong they just stay right beside you.

When I first started driving I didn't totally understand how upgrades and downgrades would effect my speed so much. It took me a while, and few failed passes to figure it out. The driver that's attempting to pass you doesn't know how heavy you are compared to them, and they may not even be paying to attention to their odometer.

If I'm faster on upgrades, but slower on downgrades or vice versa, but we seem to be governed at about the same speed then I just stay behind them. I won't get very far up the road and they might even just pass me again on the next hill.

imho slow passing just isn't a good idea. If they are like 5MPH slower than me then I'll go ahead and pass with mostly flat land. Hills make it a bit more tricky.

The way I see it is 2MPH for the time they are in front of me isn't really going to change my life. Chances are they won't be in front of you for very long, they will get off or change roads, or you will. But if I take 15 minutes to get past a truck to save 1MPH, but slow down other trucks that can go 75MPH then they are lose a great deal more than I am gaining.

Twice today I was behind trucks going 3-5 mph slower than me, who then sped up as I was passing them. That irritates me greatly!

They're school hall monitors out on the road. They didn't make the cut back in middle school so now here is their big chance to make up for lost opportunity. They wanted to see if you had your lane pass aka hall pass to be in that lane.:D:D

When observing human behavior, we seem to have a propensity to ascribe the motivations of the behavior to logic, reason, and thought process alone, when in reality emotion is almost always a factor to be considered as well.
