I retired from my last job (Deputy Sheriff) in Dec 2007, Before that I was in the Marines for 13 years. After I retired from my last job (11 years) My wife got laid off and i had to go back to work, so i filled out a boat load of applications and was accepting just about everything that came along just to pay bills. My problem now is that I have had about 7 diff jobs in the last 2 years. I know this doesn't look good. I didnt keep track really of dates, still looking for pay stubs and what not. I now really want to become a truck driver and make a career of it, How bad will those last 2 years hurt me? Is all that previous employment and unemployed time stuff Federal or company required, anyone know a place that would list you previous employers?
Sorry so long..just trying to get my ducks in a row
Already turned down by Swift.

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

I don't think it will hurt you at all with a reputable trucking company.
But if you are looking at possible training companies. They will most likely view you as high risk. Namely because of your work history prior to those 2 years. Certain people get nervous around folks with your background. And those people would rather have someone they can screw over without any real repercussions.
If possible, check into going to school. Then apply. -
that makes me fel a little better thanks...

.
By the way. If 50% of the general public gets through the next year without having bullet holes shot through their job history. I will be the first person to say, I'm amazed.
Just make sure you have as good a record of your actual work history as possible. It's the law, NOT the companies that insist on this.
You can have a few holes. You just need to be able to explain and confirm.
Good Luck. -

previous employment history matters even if it wasnt driving jobs?
-
Yes.
By law they (trucking companies) have to keep this on file.
And once you start driving, it gets better. As a non driver, you're not required to complete as rigorous a job history. Every subsequent driving job after the first one, will require an even deeper accounting of your work history. -
USIS won't help him the least bit unless they were driving jobs and
the companies actually used USIS.

As I read your post I thought you had a Very Solid work history. 11 years with one, 13 with another. Dont worry about the 2 years. I figure thats about 17% of your work history. That leaves 83% Good work history. Thats not bad!
Anyway figure out your work history and point any potential employer to your years in these 2 previous professions and the reasons for the spotty record for those 2 years. You can contact the US Social Security system, they will have a work history, although it may not have start and stop dates. You can approximate these just as long as you attempt to be honest. If an application says go back 3 years include even more to get these 24 years in. Its all about background check and I sure with your history of law enforcement and military service it wont be a problem. I am in the same position as you and if hasnt hurt me. What they dont want to see is you going from trucking company to trucking company. Find an company that will hire you and stick with them at least a year or two, no matter how bad(unless you just cant pay the bills). Then look for someone else if you want. I hope this helps. Oh and I'm certainly not a math major so take my % with a grain of salt. Good luck
