New guy here, about to start school on Monday hopefully. 28 yrs old and tired of minimum wage jobs and temp agencies so thought I would try a career in trucking. Not exactly new to driving as I did it for 3 years in the military (including 11 months in Kuwait where stop lights and road signs are just a suggestion not to mention speed limits) but I haven`t been in a truck in over 6 yrs so I figured I would give it a try.... I loved driving when I was in the military and that was in California where my trainer had his Cali CDL and he taught us like we were taking the Cali test and I`ve heard that`s one of the hardest states to get one. I`ll be going to a school in northern Ohio and hopefully my previous experience will come back to me and I`ll be ok. I`m going to my admissions review tomorrow and I guess I just wanted to get acquainted with some people on here before I start badgering for information but I do have one question to start off with....how do you like trucking in the civilian life? Thanks to all those who read and greater thanks to those who respond
Greetings All

Hey Midknight... welcome to the hang out... I can't give ya much info as to what trucking is like since its been about 3 years since I have driven and that was pretty much just local and short haul stuff but in a couple of weeks I get to go to Swifts academy so I can get my CDL back again...
I can tell ya that from what I remember California's testing isn't all that bad since that was where I was living when I first got mine and I passed the written and the skills with flying colors back in 95 when I had first got my CDL...
I can tell ya that you'll probably get a few people saying that trucking isn't that great of an idea for something to get into with the economy the way it is these days.. but to each is there own on that part though personally I think a long term driving job beats the heck out of temp and min wage work !!
you will find a lot of good information on the forums with a handful of negativity but just take that with a grain of salt

Thank you very much....I actually found this site while looking for trucking companies in Ohio, and I`ve been on a few "4-wheeler" sites (new term I just picked up lol) and found them to be a great wealth of knowledge. I know it may not be the greatest career move now but even at the lowest level it`ll pay 3 times more a year than what I`m used to...and I love to drive and be out on the road.

Ahhh the key part to truck driving... the love to drive and of being out on the road....
I stumbled on here a couple of months ago when I was starting to really think about getting into driving.. I used to frequent a handfull of different forums between the Miata forums V-star 650/1100 forums and Jeep forums... hmm I think I have made a full progression for forums dependant on vehicle size LOL !!! -
Lol....well I jumped from Honda forums to this so what does that say about me
? Go from the tiniest cars to the biggest of vehicles.

Well it`s official now...all signed up, financial aid approved, and start school on monday...5 weeks class, 5 weeks school driving, 5 weeks training with a company I get placed in. By the time it`s all said and done I`ll have a class A with Hazmat, Doubles/Triples, and Tanker endorsements.
