I worked for PTL. I wanted to go to a regional or go local so I could be home more. I was going to turn in a two week notice but before I could I brought my truck in for repairs. I was waiting around because it wasnt supposed to take long. The shop called me and told me to come get my stuff out of the truck. I asked why they told me that I no longer worked for them. What the h&//? I was told later it was because someone called to check my reference.
Is this common?

That's common. I've worked for companies that fired any driver that was looking for a new job.
If the new company hires you and asked why you were fired, tell them you were fired because you turned in a verbal two week notice.okiedokie, TruckGal13, FerrissWheel and 9 others Thank this. -
It happens. Tells a lot about the company.
Best to take it as a good thing and move on.okiedokie, Gearjammin' Penguin, tscottme and 2 others Thank this. -
It happens. They get rid of drivers as fast as they bring them in.
FlaSwampRat and Rideandrepair Thank this. -

Always do whats best for you. Dont give a two week notice, just quit when you go in for Hometime and then get a new job.
D.Tibbitt, EuropeanTrucker, Concorde and 7 others Thank this. -
FerrissWheel, snowwy, D.Tibbitt and 2 others Thank this.

I all ways give a two-day notice! I quit today as in now!

That all says volumes for this Industry. We really need a rating system for Drivers to use when considering Employers. A DAC type system to expose bad work ethics.
D.Tibbitt, EuropeanTrucker, T.Rucker and 1 other person Thank this. -
What happened if OP didn't get the new job though? This is so ####ty that employers can do this to employees. A #### shame.
So do most people really not give a 2 weeks notice?
I've never left a job without giving at least 2 weeks, once I even gave a months notice.FlaSwampRat Thanks this.
