I’m fairly new in my career. I have been hauling cars for a year and I still trying to decide if I like it. Has anyone done both cat hauling and general freight? Can you tell me pros and cons if I switch to general freight? The car hauling business is really a lot different than what I expected. Not enough freight for the amount of carriers. Thanks in advance.

Where is your location; maybe get a line haul job. Easy work; drop & hook.

Virginia Beach. I don’t want to work for anyone. I have my own truck and authority. Just looking to haul something different. No touch freight is what I’m looking for.

There is a difference between cars in a parking lot trailer and the dry van or reefer.

I prefer to haul medicines where possible because that eliminates the food based grocery and cold storage distribution BS and economic losses to time and lumper etc.

Dry van is not too complicated there are times you must take care.

I've found, there is no perfect trucking job. Every type has pros and cons. Car hauling, I'm sure has it's down sides, but with as many cars out there, and the way people move around, it's probably the best segment to be into right now. Hauling a dry box has some advantages, reefer, I wouldn't do again ever, but a box, you're dealing with freight houses, warehouses, appointments, pallets,( or worse, floor loads) it's a pain. The only thing I'd consider today is a non-ka-boom tanker or flatbed, or a dump wagon, but you couldn't get me to pull a box again, especially today.

I may be wrong, but something tells me that you are hauling cars on a step or smaller car trailer.
If I was going to pull dry van or reefer, and I do some, it would be drop and hook only. I just do not have the attitude to deal with dock workers and one sided appointment times.

Usually a inquiring asking your prospective employer if they do have Drop Hook Privileges at Walmart DC's for example.

Turns your delivery into a 20 minute routine and rolling out with a empty trailer. While everyone else must wait.

What about intermodal work. I've read the pay has gone up significantly over the years. Is this true?

I don't have a clue, but if it involved ports, I would not want any part of it, I actually hate pulling chassis for the most part, all are spring ride, most are antique, half of them I wind up pulling dogtrack at least some.
Did I mention I hate pulling chassis. lol
