I'm one of these untrained drivers. Paid an ol' dude 500 bucks, got my cdl A in 3 days, and have been a semi successful independent o/o since 2013. I bet the skills he taught me in 2days is more than someone can get from a 4week paid school. I'm also polite, & have common sense, so that goes a long way too..

I got ya beat, I didn't pay anybody, just when I turned 18 went and switched my license, never even took a driving test. lol
My training consisted of a non truck driver riding the first 10 miles with me before getting out and going back with a ride that followed us, He didn't even stay till I loaded. lol
Times have changed, actually times haven't changed, but people sure have. lol

That's kind of how I did it.
Took the 20 question chauffeur license test and now I are a truck driver!
I was working as a truck mechanic and moved trucks around in the yard.
Then I did a few loads for them and learned to shift.
Ended up buying an old truck and putting it on the road. That was 1987.
Then grandfathered in to a cdl when it was required.
I've never taken a road test.

Was there a crank handle on the grill to start the truck when this happened? :)

State of the industry. They give them 150,000 automatic trucks with GPS. Just as well do it this way. No sense in paying a trainer with flip flops wearing socks to sleep who can't back either.
Just glad to see it's a quality person behind the wheel, and a quality person helped him out.

Close, that was in 76. lol
Now, I had a pickup and gooseneck I hauled hay with since I was 14 years old, had driven many grain trucks, and even gas tractors and 40 ft flats, just never drove a diesel truck. My first real truck was a plain jane (brand new) pug nosed jimmy with a 318 and 13 spd pulling a 50 ton lowboy pretty much local in the Houston area. lol

I was talking in the voice of a lawyer at trial. I'm surprised most trainers and newbies don't lock themself out of the truck on the first day of "training".

I watched a trainer in action yesterday for CR England while I was getting loaded. First they pull into the wrong entrance to the shipper, so they had to back out into the street. Then the poor student must have taken 20 minutes to back into a dock while the trainer stood outside laughing on his cell phone and smoking a cigar. Finally the student gets backed up to the dock, with his doors closed. I roll down my window and tell the trainer this, and he says, "they open them inside". I said "no they don't". He didn't do a thing and just left the student there until a warehouse person came out and told him to open the doors. This trainer was useless.
