I did it often, out of asphalt season. Go from a 48' fixed to the spread. Just have to watch your wagon, whatever it may be. Did it for six years.
Back and forth. Kinda miss it, tbh. Wish I knew securement then, as I do, in hindsight.

DON'T EVER TRUST that what one picks up on a tripod is secure.. JUST don't. I learned.

Given the fact that we have now conclusively determined that your trainer is, in fact, a dildo, this may not work. On that off chance ask him to schedule a delivery which allows you to time at a truck stop around the mid morning hours to practice some backing. There are usually tons of spaces at that time, even at a mega stop.

    Ok venting time...

my mentor says I’m good to go. He was supposed to drop me in Ohio to upgrade today.

well Thursday pam gave us a load from LA to NJ to drop off today. That’s fine, I could use the practice.

well we drop it only to find that they now want us to run a load from PA to NC...

last I checked that’s not on the way to OH...

oh, and we can’t pick it up until Monday morning. So they expect me to do a 34 hour reset, while training, even though my training will be done.

Yep that doesn’t sound like you’re using me for free labor at all...

I remember trying to guide a spread axle into a spot. He'd set up like a moron and was in danger of hitting me and two other guys so I let my dinner ruin itself and hopped out. I can talk a guy into any hole if they listen, and the guy was listening, but that darn spread axle threw me for a loop. The trailer just didn't turn like I expected it to. I ended up apologizing to the guy for how long it took me to guide him into the hole.

He may not have been the moron you thought he was. lol

I had to back through a gate and make a 90 down a narrow ramp with concrete sides to bump a dock with a spread flat ( I thought flats never had to back up, then they throw this dock thing in) I had a rear axle dump, but it didn't help because it was fairly steep up hill till I hit the ramp. I could get her going in perfect, but the minute the rear axle broke over the hump, she would turn quick on the front, it took a while and had me looking like it was the first time I had seen a truck. lol

I said he set up like a moron, not that he was.

He tried for a straight line without having the space. The only way in was to blind side offset.

I've done a lot of things that were dumb. A few months ago I went to pull into a spot and screwed up by the numbers. First I didn't realize that everyone had parked 4 feet further to the west than normal, then I came in too fast in too high of a gear, then once I realized I was off I tried to force it in. Ended up backing out, no harm no foul, but I spent a lot more time and effort than if I had said "Roger, you are setting yourself up like a moron".

I do not back up a tenth as much as I used to in tight places, and haven't for most of the last ten years, and it shows when I do, compared to what I used to do. lol
Even when I did every day, and thought I was pretty good, I would every now and then not be able to back in to a simple spot to save your life, I don't know why.

I've yet to drive a tractor that was not equipped with a sliding wheel.

Penumbra never mentioned NOT having a sliding 5th wheel. :biggrin_2554:
