When parking a dry van, put the tandems to the rear to slow down the turning of the trailer and get rid of the tail swing.

Once I watched a guy set up with his tandems way forward, got in between me and another truck, then released the slider, and slid the tandems all the way to the back, then dropped the trailer in the hole. It was slick lol.

Don't give up so easily ... ripping off a cab fearing as a new driver is not a big deal. Should you learn from your mistake and try not to do it again? Well of course! But calling it quits because you destroyed a $50 piece of plastic??

Was making the point not all trucks have them. Our fleet had non sliding fifth wheels . we hauled reefer for same customers all the time & no problems. Didn't take 5 hrs to scale a load either.

Can I ask a question as a newb about the original post? So. The Warehouse loaded the trailer with the sugar in the front and the weight distribution was off with the coffee loaded in back much lighter?

I am totally new and not even in classes yet. I just wondered because I did a short time very short in a warehouse. Please don't ask who. And they just thew those boxes in. I always wondered about weight distribution safety but I was a newb there and it wasn't covered in the "training" we got. (training?)

    The GVWR was not exceeded?

It was unsafe to leave the dock with all that heavy weight in the front compared to the back. But you left the dock anyway?

Sorry if these are dumb questions.

Sugar does weigh more than coffee. By far.

Gamgee ~ buys lotsa coffee and some sugar on occasion.

    Well everyone!

it was a long week, but it’s time to go test for my upgrade to first seat driver tomorrow.

I’ve driven cities, highways, etc etc.

I’ve practiced backing up and manuevers.

the only issue I’m concerned about now is my inexperience putting me in a situation that I don’t know how to resolve.

case in point, today I had to make a very abrupt turn off of the scales at Loves (you know how some of these morons park). I was constantly looking in my mirrors, but I ended up so close to one of the yellow cement blocks with my trailer that I honestly don’t know how I didn’t hit it.

now, I caught it quick, but I wasn’t sure what to do THAT close to the wall. I started making very very small corrections and just watching the gap to ensure that, at the very least, I didn’t rub it hard. I managed to steer out of it.

I know I could’ve backed up, but I was afraid of making an error, plus then we have the whole inexperienced backing up scenario. At the very least I knew I could watch it and minimize any damage to come from it.

Another thing I’m working on getting used to is not being afraid to take over the adjacent lane when making a sharp right turn. However, more than once I haven’t gone wide enough, and gotten very close to taking the curb. My trainer was able to talk me out of it, but in the real world how do I fix that on my own?

In like cases, the same way you did when the trainer talked you out of it. As you get some experience, you will just know where your trailer tandems are going to be in a turn, and make sure you take enough room to start with.

Take more space than you think you will need intially. I would rather have and not need than the reverse.

Stay wide as you make the turn. Keep tge tractor all tge way to tge left until you see the tandems will cleanly pass the apex, then cut in.
