what to do? ...bad reman air compressor?

    Just put a new reman holset compressor on a N14, got about one month out of it, now it’s passing oil already. Parts house says they’ll get me another or refund the money. I heard about a guy on here going through like 4 or 5 reman’s before getting a good one, but I think his was bendix i don’t know.

    Thing is, I don’t think they make new anymore and the one Cummins has is a reman to for $1500, compared to my rebuilt which was $700, holset casting, 3rd party rebuilt.

    I was thinking rebuild myself, or take it to somebody... idk, maybe a different air compressor model/brand. Any thoughts, tips or suggestions? I’d sure hate to keep installing and uninstalling. Took me about 5-10 hours to do it. Granted I know how to do it now but still. What pain.

    Go to a scrap yard find a original 30 year old compressor it will probably work longer than that Reman crap. Or go to scrap yard and buy an old OE pump and test, or rebuild it yourself. New rings, and bearings, should freshen up any compressor.

    i might have to do just that, jeez. Maybe I could find a rebuild kit and assemble it myself. I wonder why their remans aren’t holding up and what I could do to make it better?

    I've thought about rebuilding one myself but haven't put any effort into it, yet. I've done plenty of rebuilds on my construction compressors and those aren't that difficult

    You will probably need some special tools to pull it apart. That will add to the expense. I had to buy a gear puller from Apex to do the accessory drive. I couldn't get any other puller in there to do the job. I'm assuming it will work on the compressor

    Ytube has videos no special tools needed once compressor is of except a torque wrench. Very few parts to go bad. May need to do a hone on bores.

    I have not seen anyone rebuild one for a long time. But you could do that.
    Have had pretty good luck with Bepco units and normally buy them anymore.
    Sure you do not have a restriction on the compressor air intake?

    Does Bepco make for the n14? And I’m not 100% on the restriction. I’ve had the small pipe off, from the compressor intake to the intake manifold. It’s squeaky clean. That would leave the intake manifold itself, charge air cooler and..? Air filter/turbo and piping? Or... how would I check that ?

    Weird question but did you spin over by hand when you got the Reman, to make sure it had more compression than old unit?
