I might start working for this company in North Carolina. Does anybody have any information in regards to pay and general conditions?
    Thanks!

They have their own thread on the Truckingboards. All the information you need can be found there.

Not a bad place to work. You could do worse.

Lifetime bids, non-slip seated assigned single screws for city drivers, bid routes have an assigned trailer, one seniority list, employee resorts available for free.....

The tradeoffs though are city drivers having to buy their own pallet jacks and hand trucks, and no time and a half.

Their terminals are a bit spread out, which means some long runs. Sometimes the city drivers can run as many miles as a linehaul driver. Some drivers may like that, some not.

    Good info, Mack; thanks.

And you’re right about having to buy your own pallet jack; electric PJ’s run around $3500.00, manuals are around $400.00. At my current job, I’m unloading pallets of water with groceries stacked on top to weigh well over 2000 lbs. , and all that with a manual pallet jack; really sucks if the trailers’ rear is parked ever so slightly uphill; no other choice since I’m backed into a dock. I hear those electric jacks are really nice... and really fickle.

I have mixed feelings about being required by R&L Carriers to purchase our own jacks. Their stance is, of course, that the expense is so high that it would be too much of a financial burden on the company, so it is much better (for the company) to place the cost burden on the employees. Understood, but following this logic; wouldn’t it also then make sense to require the employees to purchase all their own trucks as well?

After all, trucks are a huge cost burden in regards to company profits.

And since, because we employees are required to purchase our own jacks and are therefore sharing in company expenses, should we not also then be eligible to share in company profits?

I mentioned this to the manager; upon hearing this, he seemed to be most displeased.

Does a driver have to buy the jack from the company? Could they bring their own if they had one? I'm thinking pawn shops or used equipment dealers.

I don’t imagine they’d care where you get it, as long as you have one.
