I'm just curious. Since gliders are out. Or going out. What's the rule on swapping an engine? Do you legally have to put OEM back? Or can you put a pre emissions engine in? Thanks

I think the rule is you must replace like for like. So if you had a tier 4 you need that or better.

You have to replace the engine within the same emissions series, so if you have a truck with a 2010 emissions type engine, then it has to have the same 2010 type emissions type engine.

    Gliders out?

You can't go backwards on EPA engines only forward or same engine. so u can't take a 2014 engine and put a 01 engine.. plus the cost is around 50k lol

Yeah and honestly I am of the opinion that there is no need to have all these emission controls on them.

    Can it be done? Absolutely!

Is it legal? Most likely not.

Where do you get your info from. ? Kustom truck in coos bay Oregon are still assembling and pumping out KW, Pete gliders like it's going out of style. They are also supplying lots other shops with anything they need like reman engines ect to build there own gliders. They are still being produced everyday.

You have to tell the dealer what builder you will be using to assemble your glider. The builder has to prove how many that they assembled and sold in 2014, and whatever that number is is the max that they can assemble and sell per year. And that is capped at 300 gliders. Once it’s proven that the assembler sold at least one glider in 2014 then they are assigned a unique builder code for the glider they will be assembling for you. So basically Paccar has decided it’s not worth the hassle when they can build and sell new trucks.

Ruling coming in December. Lots of support to do away with the 300 unit rule. They are saying if these ltl beverage & food service can run 20 year old trucks then gliders should be ok to do like before.
