as was posted earlier, California is the ONLY state that allows split-lane driving for bikes =- and even there driving on the shoulder is illegal.

The way I see it, he's a grown man, knows the chances he's taking, and the consequences his choices have.

Very true, but that is why in situations like that we stagger on back roads. But highway??? 4 wheelers are bad enough for cuttin bikes and trucks off, keeping it tight as possible and we move as one unit. But that is us, and most other patch holders.

I think there's a big difference between "having it out for bikers" and "having it out for bikers who illegally bypass the traffic jam by riding on the shoulder."
I'm a motorcycle rider, although I've always had water-cooled bikes, in part for this reason. The limitations of your vehicle isn't everyone else's problem; just like you wouldn't take a farm tractor on the interstate, you need to learn to avoid traffic jams if your vehicle cannot cope with them.
This is not a case of truckers "having it out" for bikers. This is a case of people being upset with you because you're breaking the rules everyone else has to follow.
If you took your car down the shoulder, you'd get the same reaction. Or a big truck, for that matter.
I wouldn't advocate violence for this. I never advocate violence, and I think people who do should be fined or, if they pose a genuine threat, arrested. "Freedom of speech" does not include the right to threaten the life or liberty of another person.
That said, if I saw you get ticketed for riding this way, I would probably not feel bad for you as you try to argue the limitations of your motorcycle with the officer. -
I used to play on 2 wheels and when I did I was living in CA.. and while it was ok to split lanes but not ride on the shoulder I still would rarely find it bad enough to split the lanes but then again I had 32" bars so didn't quite fit anyways LOL... I never really minded when ya would see riders creeping up through a traffic jam by splitting lanes the ones that I couldn't stand are the ones that are splitting lanes #### near at normal highway speeds while everyone else is doing like 5mph !!!!!!
I found the easiest way to avoid traffic jambs so that I wouldn't end up in the position of splitting or bike over heating was to just stay off of the superslab unless I absolutley had to be on it... I was to the point I can make it from LA to SF with out spending more than about 10min on a freeway.. whats the point of going out for a nice ride on a bike if you are just gonna see what ya see everyday on the slab anyways ???
Just my .02 worth... I still miss my bike and miss driving trucks BUT on the brightside next week I get to start drivin truck again and hopefully by next summer I'll be on two wheels again as well !!!!!!
Drive and ride safe..... -
