I come from a work history of strong ethics and I've always given my employers at least two weeks of notice when I plan on leaving them. For the past 10 years or so, I have given months notice sometimes. I have two questions. 1, in the trucking industry is it good or bad to give a two week notice that you're leaving them? I've heard that if you do give them a notice, you won't really get any loads for the remainder of the time you're there. I'm sure that this is aimed more towards large trucking companies.
My second question is what do I tell my dispatcher when he asks me why I'm looking for other driving jobs? I had that happen where I put in a generic application to a trucking company where I live just to see what they had to offer and my dispatcher called me and sounded a little unhappy LOL to say the least, that's I was trying to look elsewhere for other options. Yes, he somehow was alerted of my inquiry to another company. Actually, I'm told that large trucking companies subscribe to some type of system to keep track of this driver activity . Still, I did fill out three or four generic applications on indeed for other driving companies very recently and I know that I'm going to get that call again from my dispatcher but I don't want any repercussion due to him thinking that I'm going to bail soon. I'm finding that it's very difficult to do the right thing and still be treated with some respect or value by these bigger companies. I already know that I am dispensable to my company. When I get a few more months of experience driving, I would like to dive in to searching for other companies that are smaller. Thank you for any feedback I appreciate it.

I do give two weeks notice, but I always plan for the probability that they’ll cut me loose immediately.

So not giving any type of a notice won't look bad to other trucking companies?
