I am a photographer from the Uk who is looking into doing a documentary based project around truck drivers, there travels, there stops and other such things. I wanted to get a real insight into trucking before I started my trip across the country.

I have a ton of questions, but the main one would be what sort of things do you feel when your driving for hours on end? Loneliness, boredom, fun? I would also like to know what are the type of places you would stop at to stay or eat? Or do most of you guys sleep in your trucks?

Any other random pieces of information would also be greatly appreciated!

This applies to everyone worldwide not just people in the UK

    Cheers!

Most of the time I feel peace and contentment. There are occasions, of course, when I feel irritation, frustration, or even anger. Very rarely do I get bored.

I do sleep in the truck. I eat in the truck quite often, too, though I will stop for a hot meal sometimes. I prefer local truck stops over the big chains for meals because they offer more variety on the menu, and often have a local specialty as well.

Feelings. Feelings? Interesting question. What your feeling changes through the day and over your career, naturally enough. Trepidation gives way to confidence, optimism to knowledge, loneliness to solitude. At my own core I think the most constant and comforting feeling is one of self reliance.

One thing is for certain. If your going to do this job for long, you had better be comfortable in your own skin. If you are uncertain in yourself or your motivations you will get eaten alive on the road. The better you know yourself, the better you can read people and the better protected you are against the weaknesses of of others.

YES!! LOL depends alot on your mindframe at the time really. if you are in a bad mood, tired etc, "ya can't see the forrest for the trees"
i like to sum it up like this....
sometimes i wonder "what the hell did you get yourself into"
other days i think "i can't believe THEY PAY ME to DO this!"

So would you guys say that the feeling of striking out on your own and being with your own thoughts to be a prominent feeling? I dont mean that you feel things in a negative way, simply being content with your own thoughts?

(thanks a lot for all the great feedback guys!)

I was also wondering if say you stopped to have a bite to eat and a coffee, how would you guys feel about someone coming up to you and explaining that there doing a photography thing blablabla and asking for 5 minutes of your time to take a quick shot of you?

Obviously it changes from personality to personality but I was just wondering if you guys had for example deadlines you wanted to keep etcetc if you see what I mean.

:yes2557:Are you doing this trip in the UK or the States? Just curious. Your feelings are the same regardless if you are sitting on your couch :yes2557:in your living room or traveling down the highway. I'll say this, when you are trucking solo, you have tons of time to think and a lot of stuff goes through your mind.

    Feelings?

Sitting on a Sears Elite, holding a wooden steering wheel, turbo whistling a tune, can hit triple digits by blipping the throttle, staring down 7 feet of hood...

Bored? Not hardly. I could do this job forever. The tougher the run, the more I enjoy it.
