This week has sucked. My bid and the guy above me have been cut from our lane all week.
Fortunately they’ve had a run with dock work available, so back to the yard horse for these nights. Although, I’ve forgotten what it’s like to be crawling back into bed at 0530 so it isn’t all that bad.

The suck continues... sitting at home tonight. Freight slow downs suck.

It's wild how much things are fluctuating out here. Yesterday they cancelled 2 runs, today they added at least 5.

MORE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BROWN AND PURPLE:
1) One difference between youse guys and us is that if the terminals are close together, and i think 50 miles or less is ALSO the threshold, we go to hourly pay irregardless----there is no "delay time" after a certain amount of time has elapsed. It's automatically hourly pay.
a) Some drivers might use the most crowded congested routes vs. less traveled routes in these cases. Jus sayin'........
2) Funny how youse guys are down and i'm up; (This, of course, could change at any time....) The only reason i could not work last night is because i did not have enough hours left; Many of the hubs have switched to Sun-Thurs operations, thus i still ran a full week. (i am, not overly happily, doing niteliner for now)
a) i am physically glad i did not work last night though.
3) i am curious how the both of you, or anyone else, feels about dockwork at hubs? i am not overly happy about it, though it is not difficult. i don't feel entirely comfortable about it. One reason may be because i don't do it on a regular basis. Although i think i can do better than 2-2.5 bills per hour. More like 5-6.
i am thinking about starting an entire separate thread dealing with this topic.Bob Dobalina Thanks this. -
p.s.
When your run gets cancelled and you have sit, do you get paid for this?
We do, IF, if it's an established, regular route run.
If it's an "NG" run, which stands for non-guaranteed, then we don't get paid if we sit for the night.
An Extra-board run COULD be guaranteed, but mine and the rest here at the terminal are not. This was never really a problem until recently (like the last 2-3 weeks, although it seems to be picking up again), so it never really concerned me much AND on the rare nights that i sat, i could get good rest so it was all good basically.
Same with city; i had an "NG" city run, but only sat maybe 1-2 times in the whole 6 months i had it. -
I thought about it tonight when I passed a FedEx Express truck, where the driver was being paid by the hour. It’s interesting how FedEx has all of these different operations for the different companies. You’d think they would have enough data to know which works best overall and implement it across all of the operating companies.

1. Safety. In my experience, the docks at the hubs (with the exception of one) are incredibly cramped, and the speed limits on the dock are almost never observed or enforced by management. Of the couple of times I've hit the dock at a hub, I've been rear ended by another dock worker and another time my ankle was nearly skewered by a dock worker that seemed to forget a wet dock is a skating rink and could not stop in time.
2. Productivity. I am overly cautious about loading freight. My truck beginnings in TMC forces me to over secure freight when loading in a trailer. My BPH measurement will never be high.
3. I'm far more efficient at switching trailers in the yard. Best night I ever had was 105 moves completed over the course of 4 hours. When it's slow in the yard instead of sitting in the horse I'll grab hooks from dispatch and prehook sets for guys that dispatch knows are against the wire for hours and break the sets for the drivers as well.
Generally as it looks, if my bid isn't running I'll likely run to the hub with the dock work requirement, so even at that, no big deal.
As far as sitting home for the night, no work = no pay. I could use sick/vacation time if I wanted to but most times it's not worth it. I'd rather save the time for when I need it. Even if I only run my bid 3 nights a week, I'm still pulling a city driver's full 40 hours, which would be the alternative if I ever came off linehaul. My center has a manager that is militant about reducing overtime.Last edited: Oct 26, 2019

A question to the fellow FedEx drivers, I seen couple of these trailers around town. Are they consider city P&D.

Possible but I’d say more than likely daytime linehaul drivers.
