I've got one, a 1952 Mack LT 5+3. I haven't driven it very much though. I like it, so far.

I worked at a company years ago that had about 5 of their 50 trucks that had 5x4's. Had to use one one day and ended up teaching myself and getting assigned one permanently. I liked them as long as all the parts worked properly. Never could understand the jibberish I always heard about steering with you knees and reaching thru the steering wheel with your left hand to shift etc. :biggrin_25511:

There are levels of driving those boxes...The whole thing about steering with your knees and reaching through the steering wheel is related to another level of two stickin'. When pulling a hill or a steep ramp if you want to complete a shift from one range to another you have to move both sticks almost simultaneously in order to complete the shift and not wind up stopped. To accomplish this magnificent feat you must keep the wheel straight and move both sticks in the correct fashion...Now, If I'm not mistaken most of us were born with only two hands! This is where your knee comes into play. You steady the wheel with your knee and reach through the steering wheel to get to the main box lever with your left hand. You shift the brownie with your right hand and then you go back to business as usual with one hand on the wheel and one on the shifter...Till you get to the next range shift, Then it all starts over again!

    See how easy that was?

Thank goodness I never had to learn that!
But, when I was a kid, my uncle took me for a spin around Indy in his "2 sticker".
I remember watching him do this, and it was ALL very exciting to me..
"riding high" above all of the other vehicles, hearing those gears shifting, and thinking he was a GENIUS to be able to drive that thing!
And that air horn?!? Oh, my, he let me have at it!! LOL

Black W900, gotta disagree with you. No need to reach thru the steering wheel etc. If you notice in the you-tube videos, whenever a driver reached thru the wheel to shift, he could have just as easily used his right hand only. And the first video, only one guy reached thru the wheel, all the rest were just using their right hand only, shifting one stick at a time. :biggrin_25525:

The one thing that the videos seemed to have in common was that they were done on flat ground. They also seemed to all be running empty, bobtail or at the very least light. If you noticed in my previous post I mentioned that it was necessary to use the two handed tecnique when pulling up a grade in order for you to not lose too much road speed between shifts. I have pulled many a hill loaded heavy with these transmissions and have found no better way to do it than to use two hands.

The other thing that is worthy of note is that you'd better shift them sqare and precise or you'll wind up hung between two gears and taking the shift tower off the top of the transmission in order to get it un-stuck! I had an old 5X4 that used to hang up every now and then and the one thing you could be sure of was that it would always do it in the worst possible place!

I had a '77 W-900 with a 5x4 and drove it up until about 5 years ago when I got my first 379, it had a 15 speed. I drove that pete for about a year before I quit reaching for the back box without thinking. I miss the two stick and think the KW was one of the best trucks I ever owned but I don't think I want to go back. I like my air ride cab and modern air conditioning.

As far as the reaching thorugh the steering wheel and shifting, once in a while when going real slow on a big hill but 99% of the time I never had to do it and I put a lot of miles on that truck. The other part about shifting that back box is true too, once that shift tower got a little worn, it was pretty easy to hang up between second and third gear if you wern't paying attention, usually when downshifting. On my old truck if that happened, you could crawl under it with a big screwdriver or winch bar and get it unstuck that way.
