Just got my permit and a few endorsements. Currently deciding the path I want to take before I choose a company/school, to get my CDL license.

    My areas of interest are:
    • Tanker
    • Car Hauling
    • Flatbed
    • Logging

My goals are to make as much money as possible (work the hardest and longest hours).

I must choose one of the aforementioned to specialize in, so I'll be across multiple parts of the forum researching and asking questions.

This forum is excellent and I hope to learn a lot!

    Where is your location?
Problem with car hauling is the UAW. Never know when those whiners will strike.

@Chinatown thanks for your reply. The thing is... I live in NY but... I am willing to travel anywhere and can be anywhere, as needed quickly; for the above opportunities (just a plane flight or drive away).

I've a question regarding location: am I restricted to what I can do, based on my location? (only NY) Or for example, can I just move as needed?

Regarding car hauling, thanks for the advice. UAW is a teamsters union right? If so, then it would seem an unstable segment of transport to focus on, as you mentioned with unforeseeable strikes (kind of disappointing as I saw some post by member @Banker who was making a nice living from what I could see: caveat being, he's a solid veteran in his industry and I believe an O/O -maybe he can chime in when free)

    Coffey Thanks this.

Thank you very much for that information! I greatly appreciate it.

^^ Yes but what I mean is, if I wanted to do tanker i.e. tanker training program (which my area apparently doesn't have) or get into say, logging... then essentially... I've no opportunities? For example, (I don't know for sure yet) but I don't think many logging or tanker companies (think oil texas areas etc...) have hiring areas in NY?...

Most companies want you to live within a certain distance from a terminal. This doesn't apply to most reefer outfits or some flatbed outfits, but will for logging or tankers.
Lots of oil field jobs in PA, but don't know the requirements.

    DeadPedalDreams Thanks this.

Ahh that's disappointing to hear but can't be helped. However, it doesn't mean that I couldn't move to one of those terminal areas, right?

Also, do you think specialization will help any? Twic card, all endorsements etc... If not, is there anything you would suggest to make myself more marketable across all areas? (that might ease location requirements).
