Use your cell phone as a modem

I am resurecting a long gone thread but newbies tothe thread may find use in it.. I have Nextel/sprint service. Simply Everything Plan and a motorola I580 phone. I found the data cable and also a bluetooth card for my PC. Can I use this phone for internet service on my PC? Does anyone else use their phone as a modem? Thanks

 

I have a blackberry storm with Verizon and I go back and forth between using my blackberry with the data cable and the Broadband service or using my verizon broadband modem card... the speed using the blackberry tends to be a little slower than using the card....

 

Same here with T-Mobile. Depending on where I am I will connect with my Sprint adapter, but if there isn't a data carrier with Sprint in the area I switch to my blackberry "tethered: through Bluetooth.

 

Blackberry/curve. I can get on the internet, but was having trouble getting to the truckers forum. Just got a new PC. It's good to be back.

 

using the storm. on the nations fastest network supposed with the latest and greatest technology. 3G. it was very slow. my winmo phone i bought 3 years earlier before 3g came out, on sprint ran circles around that thing. and for the 60 bucks the big V wants. i don't think so. sprint includes internet. and doesn't tell me how much i can use before i have to pay extra for going over my limit. verizon wants the money. cuz they don't stink and are well worth the dollars. sprint just wants the business. and works just as good. i have been with sprint for 10 years now becuase they always have the cheapest plan out of any carrier and not once have they told me how much i can use my phone. except for the minutes.

another thing about verizon, they cripple the gps and sometimes bluetooth on there phones. gps will work IF AND ONLY IF you want to pay for THAT SERVICE ALSO. and your stuck with the program it's loaded with. no 3rd party vendors allowed. and there are tons of kewl programs to use besides using the mapping software. sprint don't cripple and they don't charge extra.


and for you bluetooth lovers. the cable pulls down faster then bluetooth. most phones by now should be using a usb cable. and they all charge through that cable while your using the internet. WIRED CONNECTIONS ALWAYS WORK FASTER THEN WIRELESS. but you can't plug your phone into the internet so your stuck with the airwaves. using bluetooth just adds to the wireless thing. your losing speed. and your phone is working harder becuase the bluetooth is using some of your phones processor power.

if you can't make your phone work. as i couldn't 3 years ago using sprint software. there are programs out there you can buy for a fairly cheap price. i started with pdanet, by junefabrics. i now have blackberry, just bought. and for the first time EVER. sprint actually has there crap together and everything worked off the get go. NEVER, had that happen before in 8 years using my phone. always had to make some workaround or use some other vendor to make the connection work. even the drivers for the phone would fail. THUS, 3rd party software comes in real handy and never failed. you get program AND drivers.

 

Beware using phone as modem. I have unlimited data on my Sprint Motorola Q9C. I used my phone as a modem for 2 weeks and was charged $489 for it.

As the economy gets worse, the cell companies are going nuts on extra charges trying to raise revenue. Unless your cell carrier specifically states in the TOS that the phone can be used as a modem, you most likely will get charged like I did.

I know there will be folks who state they do it all the time but I seriously doubt they do...this is the internets after all.

Verizon had that policy in place in 2003. Many people still think to get away with it.

well, you can doubt all you want, but as you can see so far. i have no addition charges for my data plan. i've never had a 489 dollar bill with sprint. i've never had additional charges and i've had sprint phone as modem plan for 8 years now.

now, i've seen people getting charged when THEY DON'T have the internet plan. and i've heard people getting screwed on those other carriers when they DO have the plan. and go over there monthly cap. i downloaded 5 gigs of movie to my laptop once and no price increase yet. i haven't had sprint for 10 years for no reason at all.
