I hear you. I read all this hysteria about a physical and think how this person doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of surviving as a profesional driver. I guess they just don't believe it when they are told that driving a truck is not for the faint of heart.

IMHO, the only profession that you see more gloom and doom and deal with more undesirable situations is as a police officer or a first responder. Either profession can take a serious toll on persons without the proper attitude.

Don't misunderstand, I love this profession. Still there are few things or situations that surprise me or give me a start after a few years over the road.

Sorry to bring an old Post up but I'm looking for information I can't seem to find. I've had about 10 or more dot physical with 10 years most of them within 5 years and I can't ever remember any of those several doctors requiring me to drop my underwear and grab my balls and make me cough. What they usually do is have you lay down with underwater on and they will press down with there fingers over your undewate right above your ##### area. On your pelvis area I think it's called and have you cough. This seems to be the new way doctors do it to achieve the same results.

I'm no doctor but j thought that it was common practice to do it that way now days because it's been so long and I've had so many dot physicals and they've always done it that way.

Well the very last doctor I had was some big fat guy who made me drop my pants and stood behind me and gave me a reach around to check my balls. I feel extremely ####ing awkward and even maybe sexually assaulted. Now those are strong accusations but I know I feel comfortable. Which brings me here .

I'm assuming there has to be a very specific medical examination that gets taught yo these doctors. I was trying to find the exact procedure hear doctors are sopossed to follow while given these examinations. I couldn't find anything online or a dot number to call. Does anyone know where I might be able to find this information?

I had a physical last week, they didn’t check for hernia. But the one I had prior was much more thorough. Different doctors..

Are the CVS/MedExpress like clinics more or less thorough than going to an actual doctors office that gives physicals?

I had a hernia at age one. Or just prior to. They cut that out in surgery well enough as small as I was then. Records only showed I was 6 pounds at the time up from 4 at discharge 5 months from 1.1 pounds or so 3 months premature. Alot of things needed fixing in those days. Hernias being one of them.

I actually carry damage from that work plus appendix and other surgeries around the body in form of scar tissue. No one has checked me physically for hernias since I was a younger teen. But at some point we will check it to be sure and get it cut if need be into the mid 50's I did enough heavy unloading of trucks, sometimes twice a day to and from the floor that if it was to break through again and need surgery that will be the time it did it.

I don't worry about it. When the time comes to fix it, the surgeon will take care of that pronto. What you don't want is to neglect it if you have a history of it and have the intestine plus it's blood support necrosis which leads to other really difficult problems.

The skill of the surgeon working on the hernia as small as I was was apparent. Hardly room to swing his scapel and yet he got it done. The scar is for all intents and purposes no longer there which is why my doctors refer to my history and know to check it if it is a problem Otherwise they wouldnt know it. The 60's era of surgery is pretty barbaric compared to what we do today.
