I know modern trucks need DEF. I'm not asking about why DEF is needed. I'm asking why buy DEF in a box at a truck stop, which is usually more expensive than at the pump? If your answer is "so you don't run out" the question remains why not just buy it at the pump. On my truck I add DEF every other time I fuel the truck.
Is it for farm customers? That or it's for flying saucers is all I can think of.
Thanks

I think it's more for light duty trucks , pickups and what not . I know my TDI Jetta didn't need def , best car I ever owned .
tscottme Thanks this. -
Not all fuel stops have DEF at the pumps .

The DEF pumps have a bad tendency to freeze in the winter... The boxed stuff is usually kept inside. Better to pay more for a few gallons than to run out because the pump was froze at your fuel stop.

i was lucky, since we had Penske trucks, i could get all the boxes of DEF i wanted for free. so i'd take 2 boxes, and each night when i fueled up, i used maybe nearly an entire gallon each time.
then the truck stop installed the DEF pumps. but i still had at least one box in the truck, "just in case" the pump at the truck stop did not work, and yes, that did happen a time or 2.
then my former employer got onsite fueling, and they had DEF.
but walmart (i believe??) or many auto parts stores sell DEF, and i have seen them priced about the same as the truck stops too in fact. -
Up here in the northeast the Pilots/FlyingJ try to insulate the pumps as best they can during the winter months but sometimes they still freeze up good to carry a box or two on the truck.
