IDK, man. I've been in this industry less than a year, and already I've seen more than a couple frozen DEF pumps. All in the midwest, but still...

I’m not saying it doesn’t freeze anymore at the fuel pumps. I’m saying it’s not as if you won’t be able to find DEF a few miles nearby whether at the fuel pumps or some store. Many of the folks who run out are just forgetful. Don’t let it go under half tank, and that’s it. I can do about 3,000 miles with a full tank of DEF (23 gal capacity).

Insulated at pumps too. But still freezes

We use an 'on-site' fueling service and they supply a 'tote' with pump and the drivers use a gal. measure to carry it outside. They refill it every so often but it stays in the warehouse to keep it warm and to keep the owner operators away from it...
PE_T Thanks this. -
I bought it in a box once. Had no choice I was about to be derated for being out of def. I was in middle of no where in the UP and it was only way to get more. Next truck stop that had def at the pumps was over 100 miles out.

My trailer used to freeze up. I’d have to torch all the fittings or leave it in the shop overnight before I could offload it.

LOL. If there is a def pump in Alaska, I have never seen it. They do sell it in boxes, but everybody I personally know, that uses the stuff buys it in barrels or the 300 gallon totes.

We are six pages into this thread and nobody has responded with the OBVIOUS reason for buying boxed DEF. If you want to buy DEF at the pump, WHICH side is the DEF tank? It's on the driver's side, correct?
Now what if you are driving a truck that has the DEF tank on the PASSENGER'S side? The only way to get DEF at the pump is to pull into the fuel pumps the wrong way. If you are driving an oilfield T800 chances are you have one teeny fuel tank on the driver's side, which will require activating the pump on the passenger side, then secure the pump handle so you don't leak fuel all over as you go around to the driver's side to get the fuel pump going. After fueling you can then fill the DEF tank. After all that back out of the fuel island. This stunt doesn't play well during peak fueling times...
...hence it's often best to fuel up and get your DEF in a box.
