I've decided to give otr a try. I've been contemplating it for 4 or 5 years now and I'm finally going to go for it but I want some opinions on the best tanker/hazmat companies to work for.

I heard empire express in Tennessee is pretty good. They haul pesticides. & their trucks are 13 speeds. I haven’t worked for them yet though.

Where are you located? Are there any tanker terminals near you? If so, then go in person and talk to the terminal managers there.tscottme Thanks this.

I switche to tanker 2 years ago. I ALWAYS hear good things about Superior Carriers, Hoffman, and Heniff. Of course it makes a great deal of difference where you live and what you are trying to accomplish. YOU need to have your needs narrowed down to specifics. No company is great for everyone.snowwy Thanks this.

Straight out of driving school, I don't think Superior Carriers can be beat. They require you to go to certain driving schools though. I am coming up on 6 months with them. I will be creating a thread with my 6 months review and ongoing journal soon. I am OTR and stay out as much as they let me. I have been averaging about 1700$ a week over the last three months or so.MYSTYKRACER and Bodine78 Thank this.

I looked at Superior Carriers. They are looking at 1yr. of OTR before they will consider you. I am bit confused when you said they will take you out of CDL school.

Essentially Superior Bulk has an "exception" if you're a new CDL that got your training at a school on an approved list they have inside the company. No one knows exactly which schools are on their list, it doesn't seem to be published anywhere so typically you have to call them to find out.
I'm in CDL school at a community college in Houston, TX and called their recruiter and found out Houston Community College is on their list. I'll be finishing in December but about two weeks ago I submitted an app online and got an e-mail from the Pasadena terminal manager. He said everything was good w/ my school being on the approved list and once I finished I should get back in touch w/ him and he'll need a copy of my CDL, certificate of completion and class transcript. He also highly recommended I get my TWIC card and passport as well as having the typical tanker + hazmat endorsement for this kind of work.
Here's a link to the position I applied for:
Class A Driver - Tanker/Hazmat - Pasadena, TX - Superior Carriers - Superior Bulk Logistics
When you're looking at their job descriptions as a new CDL this is what you want to look for about half-way through:
NEW GRADUATES
• New Graduates from SBL Approved CDL Training Schools Classified as Entry Level drivers:
• Must be at least 21 years of age.tscottme Thanks this. -
I'm located in eastern North Carolina. I know that Wilmington has a couple of tanker terminals which is only about an hour away... I've heard a couple of people say good things about Superior Carriers
-
What terminal do you work out of?

Looking forward to getting on w/ Superior at the beginning of next year at their Pasadena terminal.
