Salt, sand, or anything like pieces of tire or wood under the tire should help. I think you can dig a hole and grab some dry sand just about anywhere.
I remember seeing some tire traction mats at Walmart. I’d say those can also help. I’ve carried salt and pieces of wood with some rope, but luckily I’ve never had to use them yet. I usually just rock my truck back and forth to get out. Nowadays that may not work with automatic trucks.

When its really bad I chain up all wheels even the 5th wheel and steering wheel.
Im always stuck all night in the Dog , I carry a 80lb bag of salt and a shovel , put the tow hooks in the bumper and carry a snatch strap.Last edited: Oct 23, 2019

Exactly why I'd never run a truck without full lockers. Unless you never see dirt roads or winter I'd say they're more than worth having.

i had to chain up twice to get out of the home base parking twice last winter and once to get over the rainbow hill on highway 12.

Sanders are not cheap, boss recently picked up two sets that the dealer had collecting dust, you really need to make sure you buy them truck specific. From what we determined, they were a PITA to install, and still required carrying chains (even with auto socks and auto chains, you still need to carry regular chains) because some situations they don't always work. There's a lot of fuel haulers and grocery store carriers in my area running them.Panman49 Thanks this.

You can use that wheel as a capstan if you have big enough straps plural and a fat tree or something.PE_T Thanks this.

I recall a set of doubles on what I think was 94 east of Illionis into Michigan. he was so spun on 3 inches of snow above 1/4 of ice flat interstate that the lights were pointing at us while he covered three lanes and chaining desperately. We passed him on the shoulder. had to keep moving, we were spinning ourselves on full tandem. Crazy spot.
Always, always a flat spot, wide STRAIGHT stretch or something illogical along those lines is where people are going to screw it up. -
sometimes it’s nice just to crawl though uneven surfaces with them all locked up when you got a wheel or two in the air vs bashing though going fast beating you and the truck up.
