Y'know, we used to joke about stuff like this, but pretty soon, mufflers will indeed have bearings...

Below 5°F DEF pumps freeze up and stop working. It's a truck stop's dream come true. They can set the box DEF price at whatever they want and guys will buy it no questions asked.

Also, depending on where you are, DEF at the pump isn't widely available (northern Canada) and having a spare in the winter can mean the difference between life and death (if your DEF runs low because you're stuck between stops due to closed roads and run out, the truck will shut down).

I boxed stuff is for light duty trucks. Those pumps don’t work when filling a tank on an F-series pickup. At least they never did when I was unfortunate enough to drive them. The pump handle would keep shutting off after a few drops went in.

The box stuff or barrel stuff test better than at TS.

They worked alright for my Ram. I certainly wasn’t paying auto parts store price for that box crap.

I was next to the Peterbilt one day while it was regenerating and got a whiff of DEF. I nearly threw up...

I’d rather smell diesel smoke from the little truck.

The deionized water is also used for premixed anti-freeze. There are different grades of purity for urea, which is turned into ammonia when consumed by the SCR.

The Cascadia I drive now has the small DEF tank, I fueled at a place where it was inoperative, they were out of boxed, and had to fill the DEF before I got to the next preferred stop. I had a code and CEL that went away after I restarted the truck. The previous truck held 23 gallons and derated to 55 mph with 3 gallons left in the tank.

Must be different on the Ram. The newest ferd I drove was a ‘16 F450, and it would not work with the pump.

I’ve seen regular pickups fill at the def pump when I used to haul it.

I don’t recall what they were though.
