Mmm..Let's see...The clue word here is "Honesty"......my opinion is you should have told them right away. As a manager I want to know that I have an honest person operating my equipment.

Hopefully you got them to voluntarily sign a document reflecting that they will allow you to deduct those costs from their wage so you cover your butt legally. A lot of states require them to voluntarily sign a letter giving you permission to deduct their wage for loss, theft, or damage.
