I'm coming up on the end of my student hours with Werner and I would like to know what some of the more desirable dedicated accounts to get on a waiting list for are?

Apparently Midwest regional and 48 state van are all that is available at the moment. I'm not interested in home time, just miles. Should I take the 48 state van or the Midwest regional for now? Most people I've asked say to steer clear of the regional but never say why...

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Starting out you will probably get more miles with 48 state just because the loads are longer but in the long run you will probably get more miles going with midwest regional. It is what I do currently. For the 1st couple months the miles were low but now I am going back to a lot of the exact same places so I do not have to waste any time trip planing and I know if i can park on there lot or get there early etc etc.

You also start to memorize where werners verious drop yards are to park at as well. So you dont have to waste time trying to find a spot at truck stops.

You also said you wernt interested but you can be home every weekend if you want to be. I usually stay out 2 weeks then have 2 days off.

Everything is going smoothly now that I have a new trainer. The first one should not have been aloud to drive a golf ball much less an 80,000lb missile. He was fired so that is one less yahoo for everyone to worry about.

After tonight I will have about 35 hours left. Hopefully I get a truck quickly.

I think I remember reading you were going to Werner for training? If so I have a BIG tip for you. Check your log details daily. I can't count how many times the qualcom has incorrectly logged me on line 4 instead of line 3 while I was driving. Usually it tries to screw me out of 15 minutes here and there but just today I was put on line 4 for an hour when I was driving the whole time. It's fairly easy to correct with the qualcom but you have to catch it. In case you don't know your 300 hours is all line 3 time nothing else.

What kind of miles have you averaged over the past 4 weeks if you don't mind me asking?

For the 1st couple months I started solo it was around 2000 a week but lately i am getting better / longer loads. (been sent to Canada / Florida etc eventho i run midwest regional.) So its around 2500ish + now. Starting out all the loads were mostly live load and live unload which sucked a bit also but lately most of them have been drop and hook at one end or the other.

It is usually not my dispatchers fault that I cannot get more miles tho. For example last week the place i was delivering to decided to shut down for over a day because of the snowstorm in kentucky then when it finally opened it took them 10hrs to get to me because of the backlog and my truck has also been in the shop 3 times in 4months which is kind of anoying. Also sometimes other werner drivers being late cut into your miles. For example I split a load at this werner dropyard at 11 am and my next load is supposed to be split by another driver at 4pm....... well it is now almost 8 and hes still not here >.<

O also I usually go home every saturday so I dont work the full week most of the time.

If you want to get onto a dedicated account you do have some options living in the midwest. Werner will tell you there are no opening but there are always openings you just need to get the phone number for the account and check yourself. In my opinion the best account in that area to get onto is either General Mills or Purdue Chicken as food always needs to be transported. Purdue pays .32 per mile and General Mills pays somewhere around the same. Purdue is regional to all areas east of the Mississippi River where as General Mills goes cross country. Both offer 3 days off for 2 weeks on. Another good paying account is Masterbrand Cabinets or if you live near ohio Staples which is the account I am on now in New York.

in all honesty, if your trainer is worth a ####, this will never be an issue. there are ways to cheat the system, and there are ways the system cheats you. but any competant trainer will know how to make it work for you, and how to make sure you get the maximum hours.

they are gonna kick you to line 4 all the time, so get used to it. its up to you to make sure that get changed to the correct duty status. i usually do a 49 for a few days back every once in a while, and fix all my line 4 to line 1. if they fail to change any of them, just leave it. (or if you are a student, change to line 3, gets you a little bonus on the 300 hours).

    Hunts2much,

Was wondering how long have you been in training? My husband just started his 3rd week. Yes we were told 6-8 weeks. Just was wondering if that is holding true for you.
