Interviewing A Potential Employer..! How Honest Should I Be?!?

    :biggrin_25520: I've been interested in going to trucking school to earn my CDL and get with a good company. After doing a lot of research, I've decided to go through the route of community college training. As far as working for a company, I've had my heart set on GTI (Gordon Trucking) for a while now. They offer tuition reimbursement and their safety record is great. All of their employee requirements apply to me, except for one thing: I got a speeding ticket in February of this year going 91 in a 65 (I know I was going a little fast, but I was going with the flow of traffic running a little late going to a job an hour away & just happened to be the one that got clocked.) I've never had a CDL, never had any accidents (hitting other cars or objects), never had a license suspension.

    I no longer work at that job. :biggrin_25517: Gordon requires no more than 3 in a 3 year period... You all know what I mean, and that one is the only one on my record. When talking to a potential employer/recruiter, like Gordon, should I be up front and tell them the speed at which I was clocked at? Can they see the speed on my driving record? And would any of you long time experienced drivers say that this is bar for any chance of being considered for employment? What should I ask or tell the eomployers regarding this situation?     Be honest with them, and do NOT try to explain why you were clocked doing 91 in a 55 zone.It is what it is...


    That being said, be honest about it, because if they think they MIGHT hire you, they are going to run a check on your license, and this will show up. If they decide to hire you, they already know the history.

    IF, on the other hand, you DON'T tell them, and they find out after you are hired, it is cause to terminate you, NO MATTER WHERE you happen to be when they find out...

    Everyone screws up once in a while. These guys know this and I would think as long as your up front and honest with them, AND your driving record doesn't show a habit of speeding or reckless driving, you'll be fine...

    If trucking companies only hired saints, we'd all be out of a job...

    1. The application will have an area requiring you list all tickets received. 2. List the ticket (speeding,etc) 3. The company will check your MVR with the state. If you don't tell them about it they probably will not hire you. 4. Let's get one thing straight here. The trucking co is probably required by their insurance co to check your MVR. The co has no choice. Insurance companies have access to info that most people don't even know about. An insurance co can tell a carrier not to hire you and that's that period! Be up front and you will be ok. Don't get into specifics unless you are asked,just answer the question and don't offer any other specifics unless you are asked. OK. GOOD LUCK!

    Hey everyone..! Thanks a lot for your replies, and I REALLY appreciate the advice. The ticket was only for speeding. I was never charged with reckless driving. :Police car: So I shouldn't give them any other info, as far as why I got clocked going that fast? And also, why is it not such a good idea to do so?

    What is the best way to tell the company about the speeding ticket? Is it best to tell them I received a ticket for going 26mph over, or should I tell them I received a ticket for speeding 91 in a 65 zone? I realize either way they both sound like I'm saying the same thing, but I figured that one way may sound better than the other to the recruiters. Also should I let them know that it is only for speeding and not for reckless driving? (I wasn't charged for reckless driving).

    Doesn't matter how you tell them as long as you tell them. Just say 91 in a 65, that's what is going to show up on your mvr anyways. As far as divulging the details don't bother unless they ask specifically. Anybody can make excuses and that's what it will appear you're doing. You could say you had an immediate family emergency and that wouldn't change anything, it is what it is. Besides you're going to be talking with the company, they don't have a say so when it comes to insurance. Insurance will look at your mvr, see that offense, and make a decision if they want to insure you or not, regardless of anything else. Good luck.

    Be honest. They'll find out, and if you didn't tell them, that's lying on the application. Even lying by omission is grounds for dismissal. And they could potentially even put that on your DAC.

    Honesty is the best policy in this case.
