Iraq safer than a truck stop?

Well I am glad you all have given your two cents on this matter. I was starting to wonder why anybody would want to go through all of that. And to think there are women as well subjected to this. Its bad enough they have to take the abuse they have to endure on the cb. It seems like to me if you mind your own business and stay alert you should be OK. But, I think it also would be wise to have some form of protection, because you never know for sure.

Burky, believe me I had to endure three different types of tazers in Bucca Iraq. They work! I have seen some go into the gas chamber and do push ups with no mask! I have seen others take direct hits to the face with pepper spray and kept on walking. Out of the 150 people I deployed with, they all dropped instantly when hit with a tazer, as they had uncontrollable seizures. It is something I would never want to do again. We did have one guy a little older guardsman complain of some chest discomfort when we were done. But, everyone else was good after it was done. If this is legal, I would recommend!

Like I say, well over 99% of the time there is no issue, and if I am in a place where i feel unsafe or uncomfortable, I simply start up the truck and find another place. It isn't an issue, and in truth, some people make this out to be a much bigger thing than it is. Even places with a bad reputation aren;t as bad as they can be made out to be. There is just as much chance of having problems in the parking lot at your local shopping mall as there is at a truckstop.

As for tazers, no doubt they work. But there are possible legal implications there. I can threaten with a knife and make them go away. What if you use the tazer and it turns out that the bum/theif who accosted you has a weak heart and dies? The problem with a tazer is there are no levels of malice. You either use it or don't. I like being able to adjust the level of threat as needed.

Gary, IN is an example. Gary is a cesspool, always has been, always will be.

Truer words have never been spoken.

I grew up on the South Side of Chicago, and even the "tough" guys in my neighborhood were leery of Gary. Of course back in the day they actually had jobs at the steel mills to keep the masses busy.

I take exception to the remark about Gary, IN. Exit 9 on I-80, two truck stops: Flying J and Gas City. Everybody and their brother wants to get into FJ (Small as FJs go); GS has three times the parking room. AND a shuttle bus to pick up drivers at their truck (they monitor cb, so you can call them), AND the shuttle will take you back to your truck, AND the food is good. Short of other amenities such as showers, but what the hell.

I've never been accosted there, whether walking or riding in the shuttle.

    Exit 6 has a T/A and a Pilot. I won't stay at either one if I have a choice.

Alternates: exit 15 has a couple, but I'm kinda suspicious about them.

Note: I'm a blond white boy, and I feel safe at Gas City in Gary, IN. Ain't that sumpin'!

I have to second the notion of the Gas City at exit 9 being a good place. I think that is one of the hidden gems of that area. Always plenty of parking of your choice. I tend to hide inbetween a couple of steel haulers where I don;t have to listen to a reefer running. Parking lot well lit, never seen a lady of the evening working there. Food is good, and they have the shuttle running around.

If I have reason to stop in that area, and don;t feel like going 5 more miles to our corporate office and terminal, then Gas City is the way to go. It gets the highest praise and approval I can give.

I am from Canada and up here mace, pepper spray and the like are against the law and can be confiscated at the border. Although flare guns aren't and I was told by one of Jersey's finest that they work quite well in an emergency.
