It's been a bit of a "ride". It all started when I hit the mother of all potholes late September. Compressed my seat to the floor and the floor kept coming.

I just continued working through the pain, but this pain wouldn't go away, it got worse. Finally I delivered a load of structural steel 10/14, went to the yard, and told my boss I couldn't take the pain anymore. Set up an appointment 10/15 am to get on Workman's Compensation. The doctor that saw me saved my life. She saw I was really pale and ordered a blood test. My hemoglobin (red blood cells were less than half the low end of normal). I was checked in through ER and started blood transfusions. Within a week I had colon cancer surgery.

My back still hurts. But occupational medicine doesn't want to deal with physical therapy until chemotherapy gives a green light. I see the Oncologist next week.

Meanwhile I count my blessings. Lots of blessings.

x1Heavy If you write a book there is a bit of obscure pre-history to the Big Boy.

Originally it was designed before the war to get around the need to double head the trip between Ogden and Evanston. It was originally going to be called the Wahsatch in reference to the water stop to the West of Evanston which was the top of that grade. The exit still exists and there is still a small water tower there if you drive by. If you stop at the exit at Wahsatch or look to the North of I80 right after it you will see an abandoned tunnel with a daylighted cut to the North of it and installed a new wye. That had to be done before service started as the Big Boy was too large. They also changed almost every curve on the line in one summer for that small run. It was after the war that the range was expanded and upgraded.

IIRC The "challengers" were supposed work unassisted for the Ogden to Green River route but the fast freight runs still needed a helper. So after the war started the idea was to upsize the Challengers to use the Big Boy between Ogden and Green River and use the Challengers for the rest of the line. Obviously the area grew with time.

While Ogden to Wahsatch is only 1.14% grade it is ~65 miles of that grade. As I was mentioning the tenders I asked an old Engineer. Big Boys original tenders with a full load of coal and water leaving Ogden would have to stop for fuel and water at Echo and Evanston before making it to Green River. The EMD Diesel electrics in the early 50's only had to be refueled at Evanston to make it to Green River. With coal and a load the Big Boys only managed a average of 18 MPH between Ogden and Green River but did much better on the steeper but shorter Sherman Hill.

I have seen 4104 come through twice so far....it is worth it. Here is a picture I took of it pulling into Wahsatch.

Honey lake near Susanville, Ca. Took this today. I love the mountains reflection on the lake. Zoom in to see the cattle and sun hitting the grass on the far right side...
