Why turn pallets sideways?

Turning pallets sideways will allow you an additional row of freight. Common in refridgerated world. Doing so will also effectively slide more weight forward.

 

Loading pallets sideways saves you space if they're standard 40x48 foot skids. It might not seem like much at first, but it adds up. For a full load to the back door, you'll be able to squeeze in an extra two pallets if they're all side loaded

 

Three reasons I know of:

Less movement side to side -- in some areas (Alberta, for example) consider more than about 8" of room side to side an "unsecured load", even in a van.

On a flat bed or curtain side, if you're going to be off loaded from the ground, the pallets should be sideways.

If you have a bulky load, turning them sideways gets more pallets on the truck.

Make that four. It also moves weight forward.

 

Tipping point is mute regardless of which way the pallet is turned. Most pallets tip due to accelleration and or hard braking.

 

Or turning too fast

 

No. Less likely to tip side to side.

 

Wouldn't that be lateral acceleration?
