I have a 2013 VNL 780 with 500 hp D-13. Extended crank went from occasional to almost always. I also have some engine vibration when I'm working it uphill.
Here is my starting method. Crank until engine starts to fire/catch. Then hold accelerator pedal half way until it's sounds like it will go. Then stop cranking. One time I tried not holding accelerator and the engine sputtered and quit...used manual primer and it started but not sure if priming it did anything. I always use accelerator now.
Volvo in Saginaw MI said it's the fuel filter seals..but I'm not sure they even looked at it. They had a two week back-log so I took it to M&K in Grand Rapids/Byron Center, MI.
M&K said it's injector and/or cup related. They put clear tube in fuel pump inlet line and glass tube in the fuel return line from the head. At idle, the low pressure inlet line was clear, but the return line was full of air. Tech said there would be air in suction line if filter seals or tank lines had issues.
Tech said worst case scenario is injector kit. The complete job is quoted at $4,961.01 (parts $2,900, labor 1,600), and they can do it in a day while I wait in drivers lounge. I got a similar price from Pozzo in Gary, IN.
I've got to do something so I'm probably taking it back to M&K to look at cups and injectors.

Update 8-14-18
Had injectors replaced at M&K. Starts like a new truck. Very noticeable performance improvement, and avg 0.4 mpg better at 65 mph. The tech told me usually that when they they look like this they need replacing.Socal Xpress, KB3MMX and Johny41 Thank this. -
Hello, I have a 2012 Volvo VNL 64 D13 that is not holding prime. I replaced the ORings on all injectors and the whole wiring harness, now the truck doesn't want to start. It looks like its not holding prime... it runs with ether for a couple of seconds then shuts off. Would anyone have any idea on what might the issue be? I have gone through the whole truck several times and cant seem to pinpoint the issue.
All and any help is really appreciated.
Thank you!!

My thoughts on this also lead to some kind of a system seal and/or check valve. i had same issue on my old 1999 International and it was the fuel rail line check valve at the back of the engine. seems like i had to access it from a removable floor panel.....

Pablo,I replaced overflow valve still same problem .No start after changing fuel filter housing.Took out old overflow valve was able to blow through it.A posting said it should release a 65 psi. When I got new one from dealer I was able to blow clear through it.Is this normal?

I paid $3000 for injectors and $1400 for work.
