    I'm looking at buying a 2007 Volvo VNL 42T 400 with a VED12 engine. Here's the questions I have.

    1. How reliable is this engine?
    2. Can this engine be deleted and tuned?
    OR...
    3. Replace the engine with a Detroit or Cummins pre-emission engine?
    4. Degree of difficulty to swap engine?

    Looking forward to your answers.

    Thank you guys!

I suggest getting a 1999 build date Classic Xl Freightliner with a Cat or Detroit (12.7 detriot or 3406E Cat are amazing motors that will go 1 million miles easily a n14 isn't a bad motor but I would choose it over a cat or detriot) 2007 has some emissions on them not near as bad as 08 and newer but you will get less MPG so I suggest getting a 2002 or older truck. If I were you a truck with a 99 or older motor is perfect to avoid elog. If you juse want a truck and don't mind E log get a 2002 Truck with a 12.7 or E model Cat and then get to work. If you can in the first year get a pdi turbo or tuner they will help with MPG and power and over time will save you money. Make 100% sure the truck has a rebuilt motor if it has more than 800,000 miles on it because you don't want rebuild the motor 2 years later (unless you can rebuild it yourself). Disclaimer: I am not a O/O BUT I do know trucks and engines very well. I would not suggest the volvo engine. If you want an amazing engine get a C12 Cat (NOT C13). That motor is cheaper to work on and is very reliable and great on fuel. Add a pdi turbo or tuner and be amazed at your 7.5 mpg with 48k on the trailer (IF YOU CAN DRIVE) Volvos don't hold up near as well as a Paccar and Still worse than a Freightliner or International (I love the fld120 classic and classic xl there amazing trucks)

    1. The Volvo VED12 biggest problem is they last too long. They are extremely reliable and many are clocking in 1.5 million miles and beyond. ACT had one go 1.6 and actually gave it back to Volvo so they could tear it down and do research. As far as parts... very affordable. Service... anyone can work on them not just the dealership. I own one at 1.1 million. OTR performance discontinued the plug and play Delete kit for the EGR valves. The only way to get them deleted is a computer flash. Can’t help you with that. The engines biggest flaws are leaking oil from front cover and the injector harness on the driver side leaking oil. Honesty no big deal.

    2. Just buy a truck with the engine you want. Those year Volvo’s only came with the ISX and the Volvo VED12. The older VNLs had the Series 60, N14, CAT, and D12 as a option. Maybe look for one of those? It would be a headache and cost a fortune to have a different engine swapped unless you know a shop that specializes in it. I do not. IMO the Volvo engine was a much better choice then the ISX anyways.

3 and 4 were just answered.

Thank you! I went ahead and purchased the truck. I'd like to do a delete on the engine. I'm assuming that with any kind of EGR delete I'll need to flash my ECM? Do you have any advice what to stay away from as far as deletes go?

You'll have to ask about deletes on another site. The owners of TTR would rather we not discuss that topic openly on here.
