Probably a different topic on this forum, but I am new to the oil and gas industry and am beginning to design high flow diesel stations for my career. These particular stations have 4-6 pumps, no showers within the building, but food and beverages are available. I will be integrating truck parking within the site and would like to better to understand the patterns of everybody when they stop to fuel their rigs at stations similar to what I am describing. I am unsure if it is illegal to leave your rig while fueling, but I have created a poll below to get a better understanding for your patterns. Any information will be helpful.

If you read through more of this forum you'll find some of the biggest complaints are lack of parking, people parking on the island, dirty bathrooms/showers, and garbage food that is overpriced. Overcome those hurdles you may have the busiest place around!just sayin'

What you are supposed to do is fuel, pull up, and get moving within ten minutes after pulling up. It works when executed properly. You can try to design a better mouse trap if you want, but figuring in driver stupidity and laziness is a tall task for even a super computer.
A better solution is mobsters that will take your kneecaps out.

Make the layout of the parking and fuel islands so they can be easily accessed no matter if you fuel, then park... OR... Park, then Fuel. Provide at least 80 feet on the exit side of the fuel islands so trucks can pull up after fueling and TEMPORARILY park for a few mins to run in for receipts, snack, or go pee. Having an entrance and a separate exit also helps the flow of traffic for those that are just stopping to get fuel. The best layed out truckstops I have been to do this by making it possible to drive a semi all the way around the building.

For decently layed out smaller truck stops look at the 2 Pilot truck stops in Walcott, IA. Both of these have 1 enterance and 1 exit. To get back to the interstate both have a Right hand turn onto the main road... Not a Left hand turn that requires crossing traffic, which causes delays and backed up traffic trying to leave the truck stop.

The smaller one has a minor bottleneck as the parking spots require a driver to block access to the fuel islands while he backs into a parking spot, its not to bad given the space it has available. It would be better if the enterance and exit were switched around and the fuel islands moved to the south side of the building. This would allow sight side backing, which is easier and faster for nearly every driver on the road.

The fuel handle must be manned while fueling. Particularly the high speed ones that can flood 300+ gallons in a few minutes. Dual pumps are a big benefit.

Im not current on DEF, but think a quality DEF supply with a pump would do well. Boxes less so.

I prefer full service truckstops with a staffed counter and resturant and booths enough to work in with paperwork and phone etc. Old school. These days might even be a ethernet port at the table for net. We don't use wifi in public places.

I either fuel and go or park and then do everything that does not involve fueling. That depends on how comprehensive your facility is. If it is a crappy subway lite or hardees etc with fuel pumps forget it. I do not make a habit of eating fast food, it;s not good for you long term. Now cooked to order is the way to go.

Call me old fashioned. Locating within walking distance of a grocery store and other supportive businesses is a alternative path. The money would go to that store across the street but we would still spend something in the truckstop either fuel or something else. Not paid parking. There is no point. We would just rather violate the ELD and roll further on until we find a lawful spot where we can get a proper rest without being hassled by anyone.

With that in mind, we always settle a hour or two from any major city. Never inside city areas. For example...

US 322 PA rest area near Duncannon PA from there you are able to access anywhere from CT all the way to Raliegh in a few hours driving. No big cities too near.

US 322 Junitia River Sleepy Hollow. One of the best in the USA..jpg

Fuel, park truck, clock out and go home.
Or park truck, clock out and go home if it doesn't need fuel.
