Hello all,I'm a displaced worker thinking about getting behind the wheel.
52 years old, married over 20 years and my all my kids are grown so we're empty nesters now.
I've toyed with the idea of becoming a driver for a long time and since I recently lost a job I'd had for 24 years now just might be the time.
I love traveling this great country of ours,my 2000 Harley Davidson ElectraGlide Classic has 156,000 miles on the clock if that tells you anything.
I'm on several motorcycle, car & boat forums and they've always been a great resource for information so when I started thinking hard about driving for a living I flashed on the idea of checking out some trucker forums,so hear I am.
I hope to learn a lot here that will help me decide if this will be a good move for me and if I go forward learn the do's,don't,good bad and ugly of the business.
    Best regards all......Dean

Go to the Bad Trucking companies forum and find out about how drivers are treated.you will be expected to run 10,000 miles a week driving team.

Home maybe every two weeks for 1 or 2 days.Close up your house and find somebody to do yard work and get Po box.In the truck 24/7 no time with familey, holidays or free time.Sell Harley and boat.Bad and over priced food.Crowded truck stops and parking areas.Bad weather ice snow etc.Just about all the old school truck drivers are gone and a bunch of foul mouthed and stupid drivers are out there now so might as well not have a CB.Training will be around $20,000 .Find something else to do and save your money to buy or rent a travel trailer or motorhome

Gee,thanks for the encouraging words lol.
I figured there would be a year or two of little home time before getting with a more local gig, wife can take care of most of the yard work and can have one of our sons help out with the rest once in a while.
I was looking at training with a company that has placement, seems $20K is a lot more than I've seen advertised, maybe that is just going to a school on your own?
The Harley and boat can wait as well as the car, they're all paid for.
Don't really care about chatting on the CB,rather listen to music anyway.
Had a travel trailer,no thanks, can't afford a motorhome and money to run it,rather take the Harley anyway.
I'm tired of what I was doing and the stress involved,I like to drive and see the country so it seems a natural fit for me.
I live in the NW so weather is something I'm accustomed to,can it really be that bad driving for a living?

For one trucking is one stressful job. Appointment times, travel times. traffic, worrying about parking somewhere that you don't get your brains blown out by some crack-head. HOS rules. Always something to worry a fellar out here.:biggrin_2554:

He is screwing with you, training 4-6K 3500-5000 miles as a team a week, I have my homes and 2 Harleys which I really enjoy on my home time.

    Y2K Thanks this.

Trust me I can handle all that, the hours of driving would be a relief,my current job (laid off in June) was stress all day and I often laid awake nights worrying about a certain high end job or another going bad costing the company money and me my commission.
The phone ringing all the time while I'm trying to do CAD work on a 50,000 cabinet job where one little computer mistake can cost thousands of dollars, pissed off contractors I had to get under control, crazy unreasonable homeowners, shop employees with problems and sitting in an office in front of a computer all day with no window in my office makes me stir crazy.
Not many decent paying jobs are stress free and I would expect some as a driver but I think it would beat the hell out of sitting in a tiny office wracking my brains on a computer and dealing with the phone and other crap all day.
I've slept a lot of places over the years out on the Harley, usually in a tent so I can relate to the worry of a nut case but I'm a fairly scary guy in my own right heh heh.
I only want to do 10-12 years and get out,I'll be 65 in about 12 years and plan to retire no later than that,my home will be paid off in 8 years, the wife is the same age so I think we can squeek by on SSI and what's left of our IRAs by then.

Cool thanks, what kind of bikes do you have?
I've been a rider for almost 40 years and have had all sorts of bikes,5 Harleys so far and my current E-Glide will be ten years old on Jan. 15th.
I've ridden it 156,00 miles and through 20 states.
Almost time for a new one but I need a new job first.
