After reviewing the regs again (and again), I've come to the same conclusion.
...There is no specific regulation that prohibits the storage of placards in a vehicle.
That being said; having loose placards in your vehicle just seems to be a bad idea.
Sooooo..I think I'll get a secure hard case and start saving my placards.
Always remember; code enforcement is conducted by people. When the person enforcing the code is having a bad day, you may be in store for one too....so don't invite trouble.

My thoughts exactly! My 10.5 yrs. hauling HazMat I've never been told to not carry spares, in fact the opposite! And a can of spray glue to repair/replace the labels and placards on the totes and drums! Crazy how much misinformation can get spewed on here!Crude Truckin' Thanks this. -
However, they'll really not like it if you are missing one.Crude Truckin' Thanks this. -

When I hauled paint, the shipper would run out of placards once in a while. I always had a spare set handy.

It is 100% completely legal to carry extras/ spares or whatever you want to call them.
These extra or spare placards do not need to match what's on the side of the trailer.
However, I strongly suggest keeping them in a folder or a box, and not in your door pocket or anywhere near your paperwork
Anyone who says it's "illegal" or "I heard" or "this one time" or "I was told" or "dot said" or anything else is full of it.tscottme and cjb logistics Thank this. -
Our tanks all have one set of metal flips and one placard holder. Someone this week just told me they heard that the metal flips were going to be banned or were being banned in certain states, but of course couldn't give me a reason why. I like the metal ones, but I'm severely OCD about how they should lay when the tank is clean. Seams most tank washes just flip the class displays all to one side leaving one side of the numbers to flap in the wind. That drives me crazy.
Crude Truckin' and MACK E-6 Thank this. -
They are completely legal provided they are in good condition.ChicagoJohn Thanks this.
