I have always been interested in the trucking industry forever. I grew up on a farm and ranch in Montana, went to a short term college for Radio Broadcasting, and now am 42. With the income, I have a thing with the career center where they will pay the 3.5 grand for me to take the trucking school for 16 weeks as well here in Sioux Falls, SD. I was just wondering is there a market out there for new drivers just starting out? And if so, is the pressure really tough on the new ones? What is the chance of making it? Also I have absolutely NO mechanical knowledge of trucks at this point, which sucks I know, but am I already screwed not knowing that. Or can I pick that up as I go? And will I start out usually as a long haul driver or in state? And also since I have no experience driving the big rigs, I was wondering is it pretty tough getting the shifting down on the mountains. I drove stick lots of times in the regular grain trucks of course on the farm and pickups. But never the big rigs. And is there truckers willing to take a guy interested in trucking on the road for a trip to see what it's like? Thanks all.

Take it! 16 weeks of training is better then the 3 weeks that companies offer you.

Some companies are always hiring new drivers. Right now the economy is getting flushed down the toilet. The trucking industry is getting hit hard. 1000 of driver are out of work & many more are just sitting around waiting for freight.

So, ya... It'll be hard. But the industry is what you make of it. Drivers are sitting at home with no work because they either screwed up their MVR or refuse to work for those we train you in 3 weeks companies.

3-4 months down the road I'm hoping to see a turn in the economy...

If you can drive a manual transmission... shifting won't be your problem. Concentrate on backing & keeping 80' in one lane while trying not to run that car over that just cut you off...
