Not going to say I know what you mean, I haven’t experienced it. But I will say I can identify.

Been a few years now that my wife wasn’t feeling her best, and after some testing found she had liver problems. At that time the only medicine to combat it was only a 50/50 chance it would work. The Dr.’s words were eye opening for me, the thought of loosing her was something I didn’t want to experience.

She took the treatment which was a 11 month ordeal. Thankfully my insurance through the union covered the bulk of the $2100 a month expense.

After it was all said and done the treatments didn’t work. I was mad at the world hearing this news, but I remained calm and caring. Fast forward a few years and the Dr. calls out of the blue. Another medication has hit the market and supposed to be like 80/20 effective to cure it. I think it was like a 3 month treatment. We talked it over but she was unsure if she was going to do it, the last treatment was hard on everyone especially her. I can still hear the Dr...... when this is over your family will hate you!! It was bad!!!

When the 2nd treatment came along I was in Philadelphia on Schuylkill river draw for CSX. I had that bridg tore apart with all the hydraulic cylinders off. I get a call one afternoon from CSX corporate in Jacksonville, Jim where do we stand with the bridge? It’s totally apart and locked in position for train movement only I said. .... well here’s the problem Jim, we got notice from the coast guard that bridge needs to open in 2 days...

They explained that a hospital up river was out of heating oil and 2 barges needed to get through to fill the tank. Wow this ain’t good.... they then ask, would you please just stay and make sure it will open temporarily for the barges then complete it as per our blue prints?? I sure hated to but I gave my word that I would make it happen. My wife and I talked it over, and I hated to be gone that long but she said I should to help out.

Somewhere I have pictures of the ice breaker coming up river in front of the barge, yea it was -13 then....

For 68 days we worked 12 to 16 hours a day straight with no time off. On the 69th day we went home with the job completed as agreed to.

Upon getting home I find my wife had agreed to do the treatment and was almost done with it. 6 months after the last treatment they gave her a good bill of health. What a relief!!!!

All this blabbering said, I can identify with you. But I don’t know what you went through.

I’ve never felt so helpless in my life, no matter how big or strong I was, I couldn’t make it go away. A lot goes through your mind, when you love a woman.....

If we ever cross paths, dinner and drink is on me Brother.....

I can't imagine how hard it would be to go through something like that. It was hard enough on me being the one to break up with the last girl I dated. I couldn't imagine having to deal with something like that 20+ years into a marriage. I know I wouldn't ever walk away but I don't think the aftermath would be something I could survive without a truckload of booze and daily therapy trips. That's assuming the worst happens of course.
