I don't feel like reading the thread, but the way to idle everywhere is to just do it. Don't be a ***** about it, if you get in trouble with the law fight it. I would go to jail to prove a point about idling. Have we as truckers really become this broken down that we will just let some liberal drone make up laws that affect our health? Its time we take a stand for whats right. What happened to this country!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How well does this work against companies that prohibit idling ???
Just a guess on my part, one of the gaurds has a PC with ECM software and port access....right? -
Quitting works against those companies. The honorable exception is if the company provides APUs, but that's far from common.
In fact, sueing the company for failure to provide a safe workplace might be an option if you're not allowed to idle in extreme temperatures. -

OSHA is like any other government agency......It's all about the "Gloss" and not what's actually showing.....
In 1989 I was working on the "Blue Line" project (Light rail) when a cave-in accident occurred and I was nearly killed. There was an electrocution a month before and that shut the job down.....The contractor and the sub (the company I worked for....) did not report it to Trans-Cal and the OSHA inspector, let's say...he never "heard" about it either.....
Btw....I had to file for disability since my company failed to notify OSHA and even took me "Off the books" for the job...I had no proof that I actually worked on the project...nice huh? So I never collected on a workman's comp claim.....And there is no actual record of the accident either on the contractor's books or the state's files......
The bottom line was the light rail and the subway system projects were way behind schedule....caused by government ineptness and some cheating contractors....Had my accident made the local news....There would have been a lot of rolling heads from the top down....Ranger309 Thanks this. -
Don't know how accurate this is since I heard it from a previous employer, BUT:
In NY its illegal to smoke inside a workplace. Apparently the definition of workplace, in NY, includes the cab of a vehicle you are operating for pay. In NY its also illegal to idle a diesel powered vehicle longer than 5 minutes. It would be absurd to state that you are not permitted to use the only available form of climate control in your workplace, in temperatures where its necessary. I'd see an angle to modify the anti idle law there, if I had one of those expensive lawyer contraptions.
I think PA has a reasonable idle law... You may idle for climate control if the ambient temp is less than 40 or higher than 75 (exact temps may be off but that was the general range).
