I was referring to straps getting cut by the freight or breaking in cold weather. Has happened to me more than once , it is an unavoidable situation. And it is a scenario way more likely to happen than somebody sideswiping you. I used to run straps underneath until i had a strap get cut by the freight and there went the hook under my trailer and excess strap on the hook side ran up under my tire and wrapped around the axle. Luckily it didnt take anything out, and i saw it at the exact moment it broke and was able to get pulled over. Was not a fun experienece untangling that mess and it can be completely avoided by not running the straps under the trailer .
Have had straps break or get cut while on rub rail and they stay put until i can get pulled over

and yes straps can break even with edge protection . ive been good about replacing straps when they start to look rough but it took me some time to learn.

And there is many trailer manufacturers that specifically design the rub rail as a securement point

Ok so let me get this straight. If you hook your strap properly there's a small chance it might get cut from being put on wrong. So we going to double down and hook it to the rub rail wrong too. So now its strapped wrong its hooked wrong also. Because this one time in band camp a strap got tangled in the axle because it wasn't strapped right in the first place. Ok got it....

They dont realy cause much damage in the axle. Just makes a big mess... and a pain to un tangle. the axle will tear that strap apart before it do any damage.

U have never had a strap get cut before? Or break? How long u been pullin a deck? It is gonna happen sooner or later whether u think it is or not. U put ur straps the way u want them i put mine the way i want them. Just because either of us do things different ways doesnt me any body is wrong or right. There aint 1 way to skin a cat and it aint one way to strap freight. I never lost a load in my trucking career so i must be doin something right. Stay safe out there driver

Only 3 years. And no never had one cut or brake. Did get a strapped wrapped up in my axle because I didnt realize the locking mechanism was rusted open and wind unraveled the unused strap into my axle.

Just because you haven't lost a load yet doesn't make it right. Tell that to the family next month or year or decade. That it never happend before when u drop ur load onto them when mr swift on his phone and looks up and makes a lane change with out looking to see who on his side. Take all ur straps off dumping ur load onto the family.

There is a right way and there is a wrong way. Sorry you had to pull a strap out of your axle once. You be more sorry when you dump a load on a family going to dinner.. and. Beleive me that will only be a one time thing. You won't get a 2nd chance after that.

And now you know better. Up to you to do the right thing.

Ok thats just being dramatic. Why would swift be making a lane change? More then that why would i be next to a swift truck? I drive as if i dont have any securement on my freight, wouldnt ever put my truck in that position ur talking about , and the swift driver would be at fault inthat scenario if something like that did happen. And there is no law to state that i did anything illegal. But its apparent u done it all and seen it all and if we aint doin it ur way then its wrong. But i aint like that, i like to try different methods of securement and different techniques that i learn from other people and i done it your way and i dont like it so i dont do it that way .

Ya ever thought that maybe some trailers don't have any place to put the hook besides the rail?

I have 3 of them that have winch tracks down both sides. You can't hook a strap under the sides if you wanted to. I have hauled many 70-80K loads on them and every single one has the straps hooked to the rails on one side and winches on the other. Of course I try to run through the rails where I can on the winch side but even then sometimes the straps have to go outside to line up properly.

I do everything possible to prevent cut straps because they aren't free to replace but sometimes it happens. Cost of business.

And this is why I haul liquids. There’s only 1 way to secure the load and everyone does it the same way. Hahaha
