So my wife and I are looking at buying a truck and signing on to UPS Freight as a team. Any teams out there with UPS Freight I could talk to?

Also, I have been cruning what numbers I can (I am a numbers kind of guy) and I'd like to run them past some experienced O/Os. See if I'm being stupidly naive or if I'm roughly on the mark.

I inquired with UPS Freight about leasing my truck on with them as a solo driver but they were only looking for teams at the moment.. I found the rates offered to be very low and wonder how owners can stay profitable. Their on boarding is between 6 and 8 weeks also..

So this is what we are looking at....

Base rate of $1.15/million. Goes up $.01 every 6 months till max at $1.19

Fuel surcharge which varies but is ~$.30/mi right now

Also get a ~$.40 fuel discount.

They pay plates, tolls, IFTA and prepass

    5000-7000 miles per week

    100% no touch, 99% drop/hook

The numbers I figured it would make sense. But like I said, maybe I'm just naive. Can I message you what I have worked out and you tell me what you think?

I really haven't been at the o/o game very long and have no experience in what a team truck is capable of. Perhaps it would be best to share with someone who's been at it longer than me.

Basically what UPS offers is $1.45 per mile.. Minus 0.50 for fuel and 0.15 for maintenance.. Minus 0.50 for driver pay (This is what I figure most anyone can make as a company driver). You're left with 0.30 for truck payment and every other expense that pops up.

For me, I feel $1.50 is the absolute lowest that I could run my tractor in a solo leased on operation..

$.05 for truck maintenance is way low. A team truck could need 2 sets of steer tires and 1+ set of drives a year. Plus regular maintenance. Plus there will be the unexpected. And you must be thinking of an older truck with those low truck and insurance payments.

I agree on one set of tractor tires (Ten total) every year. It is our habit to have the company whatever they are replace all of them in late October before winter. And put the best of the drives onto the trailer where possible. Rest go into spares pile or onto another tractor.

Plan on about 250,000 miles out of quality tires virgin. Not recap etc. We did about 210,000 on a original new set in 10 months in our last team situation.

Our last UPS tracking data showed a 24 hour transit from Maine upstate to Little Rock UPS distribution. Over a holiday period no less.

I don't know about you, but if that's trucking, its a one hell of a team journey to make it.

x1Heavy, you drive for UPS freight?

So if we got 10 months out of our tires, then my maintenance figure would be more than plenty. Since it would only take 10ish weeks to save for them.

I just got word we are approved so now we need to go buy a truck. I asked for a copy of the contract before we buy though. I want to give it a good read.

Thems the insurance prices I was quoted by the UPS rep. We are looking at an 18 Cascadia. 70k@7% for 5 years. That's what I used for the weekly breakdown in truck payment

    No I do not.

The tire information is useful. Really good compared to what they were back then.
