What does anyone know about Fedex custom critical

Forget the miles, forget the money.

Three words.

Be. On. Time. On. The. Dot. NEVER late.

All the rest will come to you soon enough should you be on time long enough to be any good there.

 

I met a really nice lady at a truck stop who does it. She was teaming with her daughter-in-law.

She pretty much told me that if I'm not willing to team, it just isn't worth it. Now that I think about it, every custom critical trucks I've seen were running team.

So if you're okay with that, I hear the money is definitely there. Plus it should be easier pulling those short trailers.

 

Team is absolutely vital. Wife spotted a Customs Crit in the Detrioter one time with a full Century sleeper kit that we had in our tractor. Immediately she lit up and said why cannot we do that and stop worrying about this trailer (Which was a sort of her... challenges..)

Ive always wondered why we did not. Ive thought about it in 2001 and am still thinking it over today 16 some years later. If medicine made a artificial spine for me I'll take a shot again. But the teammate will have to match me or better and that's awful hard to find.

What do you want to know? I have been there since 2004. Been running single and local the entire time. There have been many changes in the industry and from within the company since I started. We used to get paid 57.5% of the load. About two years ago they switched to a mileage based rate with base rates per load size. The base rate are pretty much a pittance rate and now we don't know how much they are charging the customer so the contractor is pretty much screwed. FEDEX does not do anything that doesn't benefit them and them alone. They will alter the lease and add ademdems and the contractor has to accept them. The Contractor can not alter the agreement.

I have survived because I am a NYC based unit and many truckers refuse to go to NYC. It's not a bad company to run for. I do like it here and have no plans to leave until I retire. They have the name recognization and aren't going anywhere. Don't expect to get rich, don't even expect to make a good living either. Just try to survive and go from there. If you can through year one you will have beaten the odds by 50% as most contractors fail within 6 to 12 months. That is for teams and singles. If you are running team with a non-spouse you won't make it. Spouses tend to do better than two people trying to run team and support a family.

. Also, you are just a truck number to FDCC. There are no personal relationships to be established. Load offers are through the QC or VRU. We check out the same way unless it's a multi-drop situation. When you do speak to a live team member they don't care about your first name you must identify yourself by the unit number.

My number one piece of advice I offer to anyone who thinks of getting into this business is this. Do not buy a new truck. Set a price in mind with a monthly payment you feel comfortable with and work with that, A new truck will cost between $150,000 to $200,000 that IS INSANE. I have been in the trucking business for over 25 years. I used to lease and own 6 trucks running air freight out of JFK. My leases were all inclusive, insurance, plates ,maintenance and the most I was paying for one trucks was $1500 a month through the now defunct All Island leasing. Figure out what kind of truck you can afford and go from there,
