Gotta be honest, if I would have had to run team with my bride we would no longer be married, but I really enjoyed the trips that she took with me.

Glad the three of you are united again and hopefully Doc will share the copilot seat.

Gonna get some coffee and food in me, then see what we can get done today. Hoping to get the timing gears and cover on, flywheel housing on and get it back on my stand again.

Thank you! Just too bad I didn't get all the cylinder kits in on time. Then I could have gotten the oil pump in and oil pan on too.

The house pictured here is where my dad was born in 1943. Dad is on the left in the top pic.... He was raised by his grandfather and grandmother ( Poppy & Mommy ). Poppy was born in 1874 and grew up to be a farmer and a trapper. Trapping was a way of life for survival, he sold his hides to a company in Chicago as well as NY if memory serves. I’ll ask dad to be sure, I’ve seen the actual receipts but it’s been many years....

Anyways.... Poppy loved music, and was known to play the banjo all through his life. Was around the mid 50’s when Poppy decided it was time to replace the cover on the head of his banjo. The cover being the white material stretched across the head seen under the strings.

Well this material needed to be strong, but it also needed to be “thin”. Not wanting to spend any money he had to find a good material to use to repair his banjo. Dad was poppy’s trapping buddy, so needless to say he watched everything Poppy did....

Well Poppy finally found a usable material for the banjo he loved so well, but acquiring it would take a little time. Take a little time because Mommy very seldom went anywhere and she stood between him and the material to repair his banjo.

What could Mommy have to possibly do a repair on a banjo..... I know y’all are wondering so don’t try to tell me ya ain’t..,

Well, it’s not so much what mommy had, as it was what mommy claimed was hers. Gotta remember he needed a strong thin material that was big enough to cover the whole head of the banjo under the strings... and the only thing around he knew that would work, well, it was on the back of mommy’s beloved pet tomcat....

Yep, cat hide is thin....

Well, Poppy finally peeled the bark off mommy’s tomcat without her knowing what happened to it. Then it was time to cure and dry it. Dad said Poppy would go out everyday and check the hide, and it being hung up amongst the other hides was a good cover up, although he had scraped the hair off of it.

Poppy took his time and kept stretching and pulling to make sure the hide would cover the head completely.

Then came the big day, the day Poppy took his banjo apart started putting its new “hide” on lol. Poppy got it on making sure it was stretched tight and even all the way around. Dad said once Poppy got the strings on, he started tuning it one string at a time till he had the sound he was looking for.....

Dad said, we was setting in there watching Poppy and giggling cause Mommy was in the kitchen cooking and had no idea where her tomcat ever went.....

Once Poppy got it all tuned up he cut into it just a playing that banjo hard as he ever did, and smiling all the while. Dad said Poppy played for just a little bit then stopped and laid his hand on the strings to quiet the strings, then looked at him, winked and said..... ah buddy!!! Just listen to that o’l tomcat sing...!!!!
