    Dear Mr. President,

I am reaching out to you on behalf of the trucking industry. We are a mid-sized trucking company based out of California. I invested my retirement, founded and currently operate Schmidt & Sohns Logistics, LLC. We have multiple trucks and employees and as you may or may not be aware of the trucking industry is in a recession that doesn’t seem as though it will let up in 2020.

It is being called "The bloodbath of the trucking industry" by many news reports. A lot of trucking companies have had to file bankruptcy this year and there will be many more to come if the political leaders do not step in. There are multiple reasons that have led to this downturn in the trucking industry. From my professional perspective I believe the tariffs are not one of them, but I do believe that the growing monopolization of Amazon has destroyed the freight rates.

The reason lies more in the way the low freight rates have been suppressed by freight brokers and shippers. For today’s small trucking company and owner operators it makes it impossible to move their trucks from the truck yard to our nation’s highways. Moving these trucks ten miles down the road takes thousands of dollars a week if not daily, the risks and losses are astronomical.

In addition, the insurance companies have recently raised premium rates which are exorbitantly higher than they have been in decades. The premiums are not controlled, are overpriced and the fees vary from state to state. Insurance companies are taking advantage of the small trucking company and the larger nationally recognized companies like Swift, C.R. England and Amazon are aware of this. The big guys control the market and It makes it impossible to stay competitive and run a mid-sized trucking company. Having a thousand mid-sized trucking companies is more beneficial for the US economy than two or three big fish in the ocean. We do not need huge giants flooding the trucking industry the way Amazon has destroyed big retailers that have been a mainstay in our country for over generations. If something isn’t done soon the same fate will face the trucking industry which essentially is the artery and life vest for our country’s economy.

I am writing you not to complain about our personal situation but more about the outfall of this blood bath in the trucking industry. Trucking is an 800-billion-dollar industry and the extreme downfall of this industry will have a significant impact on the United States economy.

With so many trucking companies going out of business there will be a shortage of trucks to move goods in 2020. This shortage of goods will have a significant impact on the U.S. economy sooner rather than later. The freight prices will spiral out of control and soon will impact retailers and then the American consumer. The trucking industry itself purchases a lot of goods and commodities such as tractor trailers, oil, fuel and the many repairs that the trucks require to run properly.

Most of the owner operators in this industry can’t any longer sustain their small operation due to unfavorable implications that are occurring in the trucking industry. To dates over 29,000 truck drivers have lost their jobs due to the many trucking companies that have shut their doors in 2019. Many companies were forced to file bankruptcy and it is an ongoing trend that is reported daily in the news.

Mr. President, since you are unfortunately busy dealing with the totally unproductive and out of line democratic party I do not expect that I will hear from you personally but I am asking if you could please spend a few minutes to briefly consider what I have stated in this letter. I know you are an extremely intelligent and skilled business man and if you take a moment to examine the outcome of this very real trucking recession you will find that it is important to our nation’s economy that you and country’s representatives review this dangerous economic situation that is bubbling over in the trucking industry.

I would appreciate any type of dialog with you to offer my solutions in regard to the myriad of problems facing the trucking industry.

My name is Thomas Schmidt, and I am an immigrant from Bavaria, Germany. I came to the United States legally from day one and I have invested in multiple companies in the United States and two years ago I stood in front of my wife and two children and became a sworn in citizen of the United States of America. I am so thankful that the majority of Americans voted for you as President and I will be honored to vote for you for President in the 2020 election.

As you have stated in your campaign, and it still resonates with me today, “It is time to drain the swamp”, I think the trucking industry also needs its swamp drained. I do not believe that the average American is aware of the repercussions of the demolition of the trucking industry as it stands will effect every American but it is a slow bleeding wound that needs to be looked at immediately and brought to the public’s attention. Trucking companies are the life blood for the United States and today it is being overregulated, the companies are underpaid and drained in any way possible. There is no respect offered to the truck driver and with today’s green movement push from the left it is also now considered an environmental pariah.

Mr. President I thank you for your service to our country and I will dutifully wait for any dialog you may offer from my letter. God bless you and your family, and may God continue to bless our beautiful country.

    Respectfully,

    Thomas Schmidt

It seems like you haul for 3.50 per mile i don't think so with the rate companies are going down yes you will have a shortages at least of qualified and professional trucks and drivers it is not the amount which counts it is the quality first and foremost which will cost the economy billions due to drivers who dont know what they are doing

I'll lock this one. Politics needs to stay in the political forum and not the general forum. You're welcome to try this again in the political forum.
